He had always loved Ojichan. The old man was gruff, but there was something of a deep and sincere honesty about him. And there was also something else. And now, after the end of the funeral ceremony, Kaemon felt a large emptiness in his heart.

He excused himself from the family gathering and walked the dirt pathway through the garden over the stone bridge and past the miniature trees. The sky was mostly clear, the few clouds drifted slowly across the sky illuminated, as the rest of the city was at this late hour, by the light of the full moon.

Kaemon fondly remembered sitting in the garden at his grandfather's house, a chorus of crickets and the gurgle of the garden stream adding a pleasant background music to Ojichan's storytelling. And the stories were always the best, somehow, under the full moon. It seems at times as if Ojichan were there in the stories. Exciting stories of heroic warriors and their struggle against evil.

Kaemon sat down on the tuft of spiky grass next to the the large rock that touched the miniature shrine, the one that his grandfather had always sat upon. Although his grandfather was dead, he could still feel him there as if Ojichan were sitting on the rock once again.

"Ojichan," Kaemon said softly, "I will miss you dearly... But, do not worry and sleep in peace. I will grow up straight and sure like the warriors of the stories you have told. I don't know what profession I will undertake in my life, but be assured that I will do my best and I will help people."

"I have never doubted that, Kaemon-chan." The voice of Ojichan both startled and calmed the boy. That he now saw an image of his grandfather sitting on the rock and speaking to him somehow was not as disturbing as he might have thought. It was a ghost, but he was the ghost of his grandfather.

"Ji-chan!" Kaemon stood up.

"Kaemon-chan... Kaemon-sama," his grandfather spoke in a serious tone and bowed. "There has always been a Moon Warrior... and there has always been one Moon Warrior. The tales that I have told you about Usagi Tsuki and about our ancestors... they are all true. I was the last Moon Warrior. And with the final failure of my body, this responsibility falls to you, Kaemon.

"Tonight is a night of the full moon. While all nights of the moon are special, these are the most special. You will be able to speak with any of your ancestors." Ojichan gazed across the sky and Kaemon followed his gaze to the round face of the moon. One by one a host of men and women seemed to step out of the moon as if it were a doorway. Kaemon recognized many of them from the descriptions of his stories. As he watched this august assemblaged he heard his grandfather say, "There has always been a Moon Warrior... and there has always been one Moon Warrior. The tales that I have told you about Usagi Tsuki and about our ancestors... they are all true. I was the last Moon Warrior. And with the final failure of my body, this responsibility falls to you, Kaemon."

"After Kaguya-hime left the earth, she charged one of her servants, the warrior Usagi-no-Tsuki, with the task of finding a worthy man who protects the innocent and fights against evil. That man and his ancestors would take the role of Moon Warrior and would be given special powers to carry out his duties," said Taira Masakado, who led the people in revolt and reduced the power of the Emperor. "Your first responsibility is to fight against evil that comes in the form of man.

"You will gain new abilities, but these abilities will change as the moon itself changes. Your grandfather has also initiated your study of Usagi-no-Tsuki Kenjutsu, and all of us will continue to train you in that art. Also, you will find a well beneath this shrine wherein lays two swords, weapons to be used in your fight," Watanabe Tsuna, companion of Yorimitsu and fearless slayer of demons and ghosts, said, pointing to the miniature shrine in the garden next to the rock. "Your second responsibility is to fight against evil that comes in the form of monster.

Taira Tadanori, a man thought to exemplify that which is a samurai, stepped forward and added. "A warrior is not a warrior unless he is dutiful both in the martial way and the societal way. Your final responsibility is to exemplify the samurai as warrior, scholar, and artist.

Kaemon was at once awestruck, proud, and humbled. His own grandfather was the Moon Warrior, the dauntless hero of the Kansai. So, it was he who was the mysterious samurai who defeated numerous villains and monsters for nearly four decades. And his other ancestors were a veritable pantheon of Japan's most famous warriors. The young man could be nothing but humble before all of them. He bowed deeply and said, "Ojichan, and all you other worthies, I can do nothing less than strive to emulate all of you and bring further honor to this house."

Kaemon is a serious man with a serious task. But that is not to say that he is without humor. His humor is merely understated and always self-effacing he will never say anything that might disrepect a person unless that person is evil.

"No Evil will escape the light of the moon."

Moon Warrior is a martial artist accomplished in Usagi Tsuki-no-Kenjutsu, a rare form of swordsmanship taught to select individuals by mystic moon hare warriors, and bears a pair of Masamune swords, Kiyoitsukikage and Kyoukasuigetsu. The powers of the Moon Warrior change just as the phases of the moon do, but one thing remains constant, no evil can hide from him.

Kaemon is holds himself upright, not out of pride but because he is a solemn warrior, alert and ready. He keeps his hair cut short in the modern way and generally has a goatee. When working as a private detective, he dresses in whatever clothes is appropriate to his task. At home, he prefers to wear a samurai kimono, gray and with no decoration but the Hiuma mon (a fiery horse's head in a circle) on his left breast and a crescent moon on his right shoulder. As Moon Warrior he wears samurai armor, which bears a white moon that matches the phase of the moon in the center of the chest and back, and two katana. His helmet looks as if it were from the Sengoku era, but is a high tech headware designed by Doctor Boom.
