Background

Michael "Mike" Bowman has loved the company he now works for and, especially, its theme parks, as long as he can remember. A Dallas native, he made pilgrimages to Orlando and Anaheim throughout his youth and teen years. As soon as he was old enough, he began to spend summers in Orlando, "working for the mouse." He took a number of different jobs there. One summer, he passed out orange and vanilla freezes at a park concession stand. Another year, he worked as a ride operator at two of the main park attractions. But what he really wanted to do was create new rides as an engineer.

Mike attended MIT and his time there proved that he was a true ubergene-inspired genius. He became an expert in sciences that he thought would help him to create amazing rides, including mechanical engineering, propulsion, and holograms. Even before he received his doctorate at MIT, he'd led the development of several attractions for the company's expanding park system. Since then, he’s worked on seven more, and participated in the development of another dozen.

In late 1999, Mike's life became filled with turmoil. His wife, Meg, a public relations officer for the city of Orlando, filed for divorce, telling him that he was too wrapped up in his work, that he traveled too much, and that he was not "dynamic" enough. Despite Mike’s protests and attempts to dissuade her, the divorce went through six months later; the two share custody of their son Zack. The week after the divorce was finalized, Mike was overseeing the construction of a new superhero-themed attraction called the Uber Accelerator at the theme park in Anaheim when the park came under attack by the supervillain group Le Cirque du Macabre. The villains entered the ride, which featured animatronic and holographic characters based loosely on them, intent on sabotage. Thinking quickly, Mike was able to jury-rig some of the ride controls, blinding the villains and causing them to be pummeled by animatronic heroes. They left in a rush, but swore revenge on Mike after learning about his role in their defeat on the nightly news.

His newfound celebrity and heroism made him exactly what the company had been looking for to fulfill the its plan of a corporate superhero, Doctor Tomorrow. The thrill of that first success, coupled with his desire to be more dynamic and win back Meg's love, inspired Mike to accept the role and develop a retro battlesuit resembling a spacesuit and a fantastic multipurpose weapon he called the "Blaster of Tomorrow."

Mike was very successful as Doctor Tomorrow. For example, in 2001, he defeated the seismological villain duo called the Quakemaster and Richter, who were attempting to use their powers to create a huge earthquake along the San Andreas Fault. The Quakemaster was unmasked as financier Harold Gemps, who purchased vast quantities of land just east of the fault in the hopes of turning it into "oceanfront property." But in 2003, Mike was critically wounded in a battle against the New Empire when he attempted to fend off an attack on the company’s two Tokyo theme parks. His efforts held off the terrorists until several Japanese superheroes and Hong Kong actor-turned-superhero Stuntman arrived, forcing the New Empire to retreat, but doctors later told him he would probably never walk again.

Still devoted to the company and to justice, Mike agreed to serve as a trainer and coordinator for the new superhero team that would be headquartered in Hero City, the new superhero theme park in Orlando. He’s determined to make sure that his wards don't suffer the same problems that he did.

Personality
Arguably one of the most intelligent people of his generation, Mike has devoted most of his life to making cool rides that people will enjoy. He's fun-loving, naturally caring, and, after all these years of service, still a huge fan of his company. While he can come across as a nerd because of his devotion to the company and technological matters, he truly loves getting to know people and their likes and dislikes, and is extraordinarily brave. A kid at heart, he relates very well to children.

Mike's continued quest to regain his ex-wife's love might make him seem like a doormat, especially because she's dating another man, but the truth is that Meg still cares for him. The problem is that she has lost touch with her own inner child. Surrounded with Orlando's high society and connections throughout the corporate world, she's raised her own status but stopped having fun. She sees Mike as a reminder of the silliness she used to treasure, but that she’s since blocked off. When she lets her guard down, she is reminded that she still loves him, something he saw in particular shortly after the New Empire attack; sensing her hidden emotions, Mike refuses to let go.

Mike is enthusiastic about guiding the superhero team. He’s determined not to let the loss of his legs hinder his life, and dreams of a day when, perhaps through his own inventions, he can walk again.

Powers

Mike's only real "power" is his genius, but he applied that well in the creation of his Doctor Tomorrow persona. His hoverchair offers him a few of the benefits of his Doctor Tomorrow suit. He still carries his "Blaster of Tomorrow," which looks like a 1950s vision of a ray gun, complete with decorative spirals on the barrel of the gun. In reality, it's a genius-inspired weapon with several inner cartridges that power a variety of effects. He can fire a blast of pure force; a blast of electricity that can be conducted from one target to another; a laser beam; a blob of green "goop" that sticks to targets; a firework-inspired flare that can blind or deafen anyone in a small area; a ray of blue energy that disrupts opponents' inner ears or equivalent systems; and a jet of anesthetic gas that can knock opponents out. Mike constantly looks for ways to improve his hoverchair, his own skills, and his blaster, but his particular interest now is finding ways to make the team safer and successful.

Appearance

Mike is tall, slender, blonde-haired, and blue-eyed. He has a kind of intense, lanky awkwardness about him, like a blonde Jimmy Stewart or Hank Azaria. His Doctor Tomorrow battlesuit was decorated with a "futuristic" art deco look, resembling the company's popular spaceman toy character, especially because of the transparent, retractable helmet, but was less bulky and was colored silver, orange, and blue, with numerous patches representing company icons. Since the New Empire battle, he has been confined to a hoverchair of his own devising.
