Background

James Jenson was born in Melbourne, Australia to a middle class family. He has a relatively normal childhood, although it was apparent from a young age that he was very intelligent. On his ninth birthday, his parents told him that they were getting a divorce. As a coping mechanism for dealing with the stress of the situation, James developed the habit of using sarcasm and humor to keep people from getting to close to him. Several years later, James's mother was diagnosed with cancer; it was determined that she was, in fact, genetically prone towards it. Watching his mother slowly fade away had a lasting effect on James.

He began to excel at school, always finishing at the top of his class. He had just been accepted into Monash University medical school when his mother passed away. In the wake of what he saw as his "failure" to help her, he swore to dedicate his life to helping people like her. This was a hard time for James. He struggled with both the grief of his loss as well as his studies. On top of it all, he was working part time as a waiter to support himself.

James finally completed his courses and graduated at the top of his class and was flooded with offers of employment. James finally chose to take a research position with the CSIRO that enabled him to both work with patients as well as do extensive genetics research.

It quickly became obvious to his superiors that Dr. Jenson had a natural instinct for genetics. His promotions came fast and furious, somewhat due to the number of scientists who redirected into nano-technology in the early eighties. He was appointed the head of genetics research when the former head of research, his mentor, retired. He took an under-budgeted staff position and worked it into a well funded center of the industry.

James excelled in this role and quickly became recognized as one of the pre-eminent genetics researchers in the world. Along the way, he worked in the studies that identified the so-called "Uber-gene", which became part of the Rothlyn/Dalburg test. His hand was felt in creating treatments for numerous genetic disorders. He even took part in the repopulation of several near extinct species through cloning. It was while at a conference in Paris that he met and fell in love with the French super heroine Lethargy. Unfortunately their short romance was terminated after Lethargy blamed him for the loss of their unborn child nine months later. Something over which he had no control.

In 1997, Dr. Jenson was asked by the world health organization to help on some of its projects at its facility in Denver. He eagerly accepted and moved there to begin work. He had only been working on the project for a few months when that same facility was sabotaged by CLAW. James was working on a new procedure that used animal DNA to destroy cancerous cells in humans when an explosion rocked the complex. James was thrown amongst his lab equipment, bathing him in a mixture of complex chemical solutions and animal DNA samples. The explosion killed all of the other researchers and placed James in a coma.

Several weeks later, James awoke in a hospital. Extremely weak, James struggled to sit up and in doing so noticed that his skin was now brilliant red in color. At this, he began to panic. Eventually calmed by the hospital staff, James was notified that in addition to his change in skin color, doctors had discovered that his molecular structure seemed unstable (though they weren't sure how or if it was dangerous to him). James agreed to undergo some testing.

Working long hours produced no explanations as to what effect the instability in his structure was having on him. It wasn't until late one night, when he got distracted, that the effects became apparent. While watching a television show on tigers in the hospital's cafeteria, James began to reminisce on how he had helped to bring the species back from near extinction. It took him a moment to notice that his surroundings looked different. The furniture was taller, smells and sounds were clearer... And his colleagues were pointing and screaming at him. He fainted after spotting his face...the face of a bright red tiger...in a mirrored surface.

Over the next few months he underwent a new battery of tests. He soon learned that he was able to assume the form of any animal, although they were always red in color. With practice, he was able to assume the form of larger and smaller sized animals.

He eventually returned to work, trying to put the whole issue of his powers behind him. It wasn't until one fateful day while he was visiting the local museum that his world turned around. A group of thieves tried to rob the museum and James instinctively tried to stop them. While he did manage to thwart their efforts he was critically wounded. Expecting to spend months in hospital again, he learned of another effect of his powers: accelerated healing. It was while undergoing physical therapy that he met his future fiancÚ, Rahne Morrison, a nurse at the hospital. It was around this time that the call for heroes in Denver went out from David Perkins. James, after much discussion with his father and fiancÚ, applied, though he was certain his lack of experience would count against him and he was unsure if he would actually be able to make that much of a difference. He was however accepted and joined the team. Having already amassed a private fortune he donates his pay to various charities.

Personality

Dr. Jenson is an altruist at heart, even though his demeanor may make others think otherwise. On the surface, he appears to be caustic, but underneath he is still deeply affected by his parent's divorce, his mother's death, and the tragic ending of an earlier relationship while in Paris. The only people he is relatively close to are his father, Peter Jenson, and his fiancÚ.

He is not sure of himself in the role of "superhero", and feels that any successes he has had so far have been the result of luck more than anything else. He is far more comfortable in the lab than on the battlefield.

James is a methodical and logical man, especially when it comes to research. Because of his medical training, as well as the loss of his mother and unborn child, James has strict moral compunctions about killing. He will never intentionally take the life of another.

Quote

"I have red skin? Nooooo. Hmm I wonder do they still give out Nobel prizes for pointing out the bloody obvious, cause I think I may be looking this years winner right here."

Powers

Manimal is able to assume the form of any natural animal between 12.5 centimeters and 8 meters tall. Due to his power, his coloration remains constant. He is also able to assume gigantic or miniature versions of standard animals. In recent days, he has begun to exhibit signs that he can take on animalistic traits without fully transforming. Dr. James Jenson is also a highly talented geneticist and medical doctor.

Appearance

Manimal is a short, slightly built man who is nevertheless still in good shape. The thing that stands out most about him is the fact that his skin, eyes, and hair are all a brilliant crimson red. Despite this odd coloring, he is still a handsome man.

Manimal dresses in comfortable clothing, usually slacks and a t-shirt, and loathes ties and shoes. His costume, on the rare occasion he wears it, is a yellow bodysuit and black leather jacket. He has taken to having the Denver Defenders insignia sewn onto a lot of his clothing so that he doesn't need to change all of the time.
