Background

Kate Mercouris had trouble sleeping during high school. Her family ran a series of fish-related businesses across Melbourne's western suburbs and Kate and her four brothers were expected to work in various roles as soon as they returned home from school. Her friends were mostly in the same situation and Kate assumed her insomnia was just part of growing up. Her school work suffered, she became cynical and caustic at home, and at the age of fifteen Kate attempted to kill herself. She failed and ended up in hospital where the doctors discovered abnormal brain activity which they linked to her disrupted sleep patterns.

Unfortunately the medical experts could not provide any further information apart from identification of the abnormality. Kate was eventually sent home with oppressive sleep medication and little optimism about a cure. A year passed in a medicated haze. Kate's family accepted her condition but refused to discuss it with her or anyone else. It grated on Kate's nerves until one day she decided to refuse further medication. The sleeplessness returned but this time Kate felt a sense of relief rather than despair.

During the dark nights when she sat and waited for morning, Kate began to sense more to her condition. She heard voices and music and had 'waking dreams' which often turned out to be prophetic. She received strange and fantastic visitors in her second-storey bedroom: monsters and gods, sentient animals and displaced spirits. They came to her because she radiated some untapped chthonic energy. They asked her questions and she gave them answers, using knowledge which seemed so suddenly obvious but which had not been present before.

She became an oracle.

She established the Hecate Club and continued to act as a neutral mediator between the diverse populations of the city. Kate cultivates knowledge and contacts, and her Club has become one of the most popular meeting places for metahumans and the supernatural in Melbourne.
