Background

Roland Doles was a career peacekeeping officer. Descended from Croatian and Slovene roots, he had been posted to a wide variety of countries over the course of his career, most recently in Vienna, Austria. He fell in love with the Austrian countryside, and when his tour in Vienna was up he requested and was granted a permanent posting there.

He and his wife moved (permanently, they hoped) to Klagenfurt, near the Slovene border, and it was here that their son Erich was born. Erich's parents suspected he was an active uberhuman from the time he was young, but his abilities seemed neither dramatic nor dangerous.

Erich's father had worked with uberhumans once in awhile throughout his career, and he regarded uber-abilities as an opportunity rather than a cause for concern. Erich's mother Adria was also an active uberhuman, though her abilities were limited to weak telekinesis---little more than enough to slide pennies across the table.

Erich's abilities began to manifest in small ways well before puberty, when he was five or six. He showed an early fondness for plants of all sorts. More unusual was that they also showed a marked fondness for him. Plants flourished in his presence, much to his mother's delight, though it was some time before his parents realized that her newfound green thumb was really Erich's doing.

Roland and Adria encouraged Erich to explore and exercise his abilities, and to work on developing discipline and control. Their household became very green.

In school Erich was generally shy -- not painfully so, but despite the encouragement of his family he was acutely aware that he was different from his classmates. He learned early on that he couldn't eat meat in any quantity without becoming ill, which set him apart a bit at mealtimes. He was a competent athlete, but was not greatly interested in competitive sports. He found it easier to retreat into books and study. The result was good grades, but only a few friends.

His first experience with steady dating wasn't until his last year of vocational school, when he was 17, and that lasted only a couple of months. The breakup was not dramatic, but Erich was disappointed nonetheless. By the end of that year Erich was beginning to feel a bit of wanderlust, and was ready to move on to University studies.

He was easily accepted to University in Vienna, and moved there shortly after receiving his admissions letter. He was still shy, something that he would probably never completely overcome, but he was beginning to handle it much better. He graduated with honors from the University, and spent the next year or so unsure what to do with his life. He traveled throughout much of Europe, but found himself returning to Northern Italy more and more frequently. He liked the Italian culture and countryside, and the proximity to the areas of Eastern Europe and his family roots combined to draw him back.

Various career possibilities occurred to him, as well as non-career ways to spend a few years aimlessly, but he knew that none of those would really be satisfying. He had continued to practice the use of his uber-powers, honing his abilities (but not advertising them, generally, as he'd found that not everyone reacted well), and he realized that anything he settled on would have to incorporate the use of his abilities in some productive way.

The [Major Super Team] became an early role model for Erich. Though his abilities lacked the power of the [Major Super Team] members, he felt drawn to a similar career, and after some deliberation Forrestal was born. He enjoyed fair success fighting crime on his own in and around Austria, but he continued to travel as well, and he followed the lives of the [Major Super Team] and other independent heroes like The Brotherhood. When news of the re-formation of the Dawnstars following their string of tragedies reached him, it seemed clear that he should investigate the possibility of joining them.

Personality

Erich is quiet and reserved, preferring not to be the center of attention. Some of his youthful shyness remains, though he now has the confidence and maturity to step forward when the situation warrants. Nevertheless, he dislikes being pushed into the spotlight when it's not necessary. At the University he learned to hate karaoke bars, an opinion he still holds.

Erich has had no meaningful romantic relationship since his University years, and at times he finds himself lonely for one. He knows this about himself though, and generally accepts it with good perspective. He knows that it will happen when it happens, or not, and angst on his part will be of no use.

Powers

Erich has great affinity for and control over plants. He can cause them to grow at a tremendously accelerated rate, and well beyond their normal proportions. He can animate them, causing them to move and mold themselves as he wishes. For a better view, for example, he can command a tall tree to reach down and lift him up, or nearby vines to reach out and entangle an adversary. He can't make plants uproot themselves and move about, though -- he can't make a tree behave like an Ent, but a Whomping Willow is easily manageable.

He also has a sort of empathic affinity for plants, and while it's debatable whether it could be called communication, he can sense the condition and state of any plant. Healthy or not, dry roots, broken branches, chipped or scuffed bark, insect problems; all these are clear to him. He cannot animate or significantly alter non-living plant matter (cut lumber, deadwood, a mahogany desk), but he can still get a sense of its nature -- condition, rough size and shape, etc.

Erich wears a leather belt with many pockets, and in each pocket is a supply of seeds of various kinds. These he can toss to the ground and cause to grow very rapidly, though of course there must be soil for them to grow in. Generally they can pull the water they need from the soil itself, but in extremely dry climes where the soil is completely parched they may grow poorly or not at all.

One aspect of his power that he does not control is that plants of all types flourish in his presence. They will not grow beyond their normal size unless he concentrates on them, but they will become green, healthy, and tend to bloom or put on new foliage if he is near for a significant period of time. This effect fades over time if he leaves the vicinity, but can sometimes persist for several hours.

Despite the focus of his abilities, Erich has no plant-like aspects to his own physiology at all. Physically, he is in every respect a completely normal human.

Appearance

Slender of build and average of height, Erich lacks the exaggerated musculature of many heroes whose meta-genes have affected their build. He has fine, pale blond hair that falls below his collar, and he usually wears it loose. His eyes are a clear, striking green, and people often mistakenly assume that he wears tinted contacts. He has a light, almost Scandinavian complexion. Though generally regarded as handsome, he can seem dwarfed by some of the more physically imposing metahumans.

He wears custom armor of a medium forest green with lighter green trim, dark green leather boots, and a wide leather belt with many pockets all around. He does not wear a mask, as he does not maintain a secret identity.
