Background

María and Marilú Coronel were considered unexceptional in their small town of Zamora. Apart from being identical twins they were little more than a pair of plain girls from a poor family. Their father worked in nearby Nambija, which was even smaller than Zamora and known for nothing apart from its battered gold mine. When their father died in a mining disaster everyone seemed to readily accept that the girls would be sent off to the city. There wasn't much in the way of alternatives and no one missed them much, not even their mother.

The girls lived with an aunt and her new husband in Cuenca. They were treated as servants but had regular meals and a house to live in, so they didn't complain. At least, that's what the people who knew them would say later. At the time the girls were actually fiercely unhappy and grew to resent their new guardians and their mother who had abandoned them. As their anger grew, the world around them began to be affected.

In 2006 a major earthquake hit the Cuenca region resulting in extensive damage to the colonial town, destroying many old buildings. There was a major effort by the government and the worldwide community to recover some of the lost heritage, but in the midst of the crisis no one noticed the disappearance of the two Coronel girls. When they were eventually listed as missing, people assumed they had either been killed and never recovered, or else they had run away or been stolen. No one gave it much thought or attention, not even their guardians who saw it as a mixed blessing. The girls weren't particularly good cleaners anyway.

María and Marilú had run away, mostly to escape the earthquake which they didn't realise came from their own anger and frustration. They were ubers, although it took them months to work it out, and in the meantime they were hounded through southern Ecuador by more and more earthquakes. Whenever they found a place to stay, they would inevitably find themselves in trouble and then there would be an earthquake.

This series of disasters ended when the girls were stopped by a seismologist who had been tracking their movements. Amaryllis Lorenzo was no ordinary seismologist, however. She was the super villain Ocelot, a woman who had spent the past five years plundering Ecuador's multitude of gold and copper mines. She discovered the uberhuman twins by accident but saw it as an opportunity to broaden her own criminal activities. While never a particularly emotional woman, Amaryllis managed to comfort the girls and explain to them their unique nature.

The girls seemed to latch on to the kindness in Amaryllis's eyes and words, and before she knew it, Amaryllis had become the leader in a trio of criminals. The twins were happy to assist their new friend in exchange for a little comfort in their lives: something which they had never experienced before. They were particularly attracted to the gleeful abandon shown by Amaryllis, and her enthusiastic attacks on mining companies. The girls came to the twisted conclusion that since their father was killed in a mine it was only fair that the mining industries should compensate them.

The logic of their argument has been stretched a bit lately since the girls and Ocelot have begun to turn their thieving attention on the nation's banks, but since they tend to steal gold and gold bullion there is still a link and the girls seem happy to justify their actions in that way.

Personality
The Earthquake Twins are young and naive. At sixteen, they are a little unbalanced. They have grown up in poverty and ignorance, but now wield enormous raw power. Their outlook on life is coloured by popular culture and their own sense of what is right and wrong. Usually this involves 'right' being what they want and 'wrong' being what they don't want. Ocelot has managed to lead them in the direction of career criminals and as they grow older they are becoming more and more accustomed to living in their own moral code.

The girls are very close to each other. While most twins separate just after conception, María and Marilú were actually born as an individual. It was their ubergene which enabled them to separate into two individuals after birth, something which their parents and the local doctor were quite happy to keep secret, so much so that the girls themselves have no idea about the circumstances of their birth.
Quote
María: "Hey, sis, did you think that security guard from the bank was hot?"
Marilú: "Yeah, like totally, but we've got to keep business from, like, you know, pleasure Maria."
María: "Yeah... but, like why?"
Marilú: "Don't you know, it's like the code, okay?"
María: "Oh yeah, the code."
Powers

The twins are capable of unleashing seismic disruptions, often resulting in earthquakes of varying magnitude. They can release this energy as physical shockwaves carried through the air or through the ground, often with devastating effects. They are able to manipulate this force in a variety of ways, such as using it to carry them along through the air, as well as create force fields and manipulating rock and stone. Their power is severely limited, however, and requires that the girls maintain physical contact.

Appearance

María and Marilú are identical twins. They have large brown eyes, shoulder-length straight black hair with a severe fringe across a high forehead, and pale skin, especially considering their mestizo heritage. They normally wear identical clothing which is generally off the rack street wear, but when on duty they wear durable kevlar armour provided by Ocelot. The armour is a black bodysuit and the girls wear a brown vest, elbow pads, gloves and boots. The vest has a white shockwave pattern.
