Background

Divs are an ancient, otherworldly race of demons who have become a symbol of evil in Azerbaijan and surrounding areas. An evil, hairy, frightening Div who likes to eat children is featured in the much-loved fairy tale of Jirtdan. But, as with many tales told by man, the story of the Div has been manipulated to serve a purpose: to frighten children into obeying their parents' wishes, and more generally to dissuade people from going against the wishes of authority.

Divs are really a small population of demons from a dimension known as Afandiyev. In ancient times the barriers between our dimension and theirs was weaker and there were examples of beings from one side moving into the other. Divs appear to be oddly constructed with multiple numbers of limbs that appear in unusual places, large facial features and giant-like bodies. They are, however, universally dim and inherently peaceful. History has ignored the Div, although folklore and legend includes them in various stories around the Azerbaijan area.

In the late 1600s, Afandiyev was devastated by civil war, instigated by an evil sorcerer from the Earth Dimension. The population was cut down to twenty-three, and the future of the race of demons seemed to be destroyed.

Igor Rylov appeared for the first time in Baku during 1937, just prior to the outbreak of World War II. He had stumbled into the Earth Dimension - a place that was considered taboo since the Civil War. The Div who called himself Igor Rylov was quickly determined to be insane and locked away. For a long time he sat and watched the world, but eventually became bored and walked out of the institution - through the walls.

He transformed into his Div form, which included a third arm sprouting from his back as well as a hideous visage. The people of Baku were terrified and the Russians considered him an evil spirit and attempted to kill him. Their attacks were ineffective but it did trigger a fury that resulted in half of Baku being levelled to the ground.

During this time the Div was known as "The Terror" and became somewhat infamous during World War II and especially after the war in the Middle East. Eventually his fury faded and Igor discovered a way to return to his dimension. Upon his return he was considered a pariah and shunned by all who had known him previously. For decades he sat and waited for acceptance but it never came.

Azerbaijan became gripped with civil unrest in 1990 as the people pushed for independence from Soviet rule. The protests were brutally subdued during a time known as Black January, but a year later the country succeeded in gaining independence. The country fell into a confused state after gaining this independence and Azerbaijan quickly became corrupt: run by organised crime and crooked politicians.

It was at this transitional time that the Div returned.

He saw a changed world and decided that the people he saw around him in Baku were oppressed and needed a champion. He heard about superheroes from other countries, especially Russia, and modelled himself on their conduct. He became Div, the monster hero. Div worked publicly to clean up corruption while politician Heydar Aliyev cleaned up systems of government and expanded production of oil. Together they stabilised Azerbaijan, although they never actually met publicly.

When Aliyev died, the country was again thrust into confusion. Corruption seems to be waiting in the wings and surged forward to claim the small country. Gambling halls sprung up in towns, bribes were required for even the simplest of transactions and stand over tactics were rife.

Div stood against the tide of corruption, but this time it seemed like the government was working against him. Aliyev's successor, his son, did not share his father's views. He was a man who loved power and saw opportunities in the despair of his people.

Div knew that it was now up to him alone to return Azerbaijan to prosperity.

It was a daunting task for someone without a whole lot of intellectual dexterity, so the appearance of the teen hero Uzan helped to lift the Div's spirits. Together they fight crime and corruption, while also showing the people of Azerbaijan that their is hope and optimism in the world.

Personality

Div is a simple being. He is certainly strong and powerful, but his spirit is gentle and loving. He wants peace for the people he has adopted as his own, and sees himself as their protector - mostly because he has been exiled from his own family. He follows a hero's code which he constructs from reading the exploits of other heroes, particularly Russian ones.

He has discovered that his strength and presence are able to make changes in the corruption he sees around him. Ideally he would like to sit under a tree and watch the world grow up around him on a summer's day, but he realises that he must act to protect the ones he loves. If he can smash the badness out of Azerbaijan, then that is what he must do.

Quote

"Div do good. Bring smiles to little people."

Powers

Div is an extradimensional being native to the Afandiyev Dimension. He is unremarkable for a Div, but in comparison with humans he possesses almost god-like strength and durability (particularly to physical harm), as well as an intimidating visage. His true form is like a cubist or abstract painting, but he is able to modify his form to become a very large and average looking giant man.

Like all Div he is highly resistant to magic, and is able to perceive magical properties. One of the reasons the evil sorcerer orchestrated a Civil War in Afandiyev was because he could not attack the beings directly.

Div is able to return to his home dimension once a month once the planets are in the correct alignment. He is unaware of the intricacies involved but knows instinctively when the time is right.

Appearance

Igor Rylov appears to be a thuggish man who stands nearly three metres tall and a two metres wide. He has a simple expression on his face, framed by a slightly flabby face and bald head. He is bulky and plain looking. His nose appears broken and swollen and his eyes are small and make him appear stunned.

In his true form, Div is larger and wider, although much of the flab on his body hardens to solid steel-like muscle. He is brightly coloured in red and orange fur, has large facial features, small horns on his head, and sharp teeth. His limbs are thick and powerful and he has a third arm sprouting from his back.
