Background

(Hydro exists within the Silver Age Era)

A fierce storm raged over a petrochemical plant in El Salvador, the driving rain obscuring the shadowy figures which moved with purpose through the outer perimeter fences. The men were trained by the United States, their mission to infiltrate a secret criminal installation belonging to the enigmatic CLAW organisation. Their moves were professional, well-disciplined; but the surveillance equipment employed by CLAW was second to none. Their every move had been carefully catalogued and analysed. When they reached the secondary security fence floodlights were switched on, the beams of light cutting through the driving rain.

The men didn't freeze. They parted into two streams, diverting attention two ways. They had expected such a trap and moved accordingly. CLAW anticipated their moves. The security teams cut off any chance of escape, outflanking the Americans.

Gunshots were fired.

Lightning scarred the night sky.

And then a containment tank was breached by strafing fire just as a fork of lightning struck. The combination of exploding petroleum and the electrical charge of the storm unleashed a terrifying explosion. The shockwave thundered outward, triggering another series of minor explosions within the installation.

The CLAW scientists were covertly developing a weapon which would liquefy opponents. Their laboratory was ripped apart by the explosions, their work ruined. In the mayhem, a globule of translucent liquid raised itself above the floor. It floated in an impenetrable sphere the size of a basketball.

As the fire raged, the sphere grew. Within minutes it had taken on the form of a young man although still undoubtedly composed of liquid.

When Captain Nicolas Lizardi of the San Salvador police department arrived on the scene, the young humanoid was sitting resolutely in the air at the front of the ruined installation. There was no sign of the CLAW scientists or the American spies. The police man took the young, wide-eyed being away, not realising he was being watched by the remnants of CLAW.

It was 1969. Nicolas Lizardi didn't explain himself to the five other officers on the scene, and left them to deal with the fire. He sheltered the creature with his jacket and drove him to the Lizardi home. Without saying anything, Nicolas and his wife Fernandina took the innocent creature into their home. Fernandina's eyes brimmed with tears as she beheld the boy-creature. Two years earlier her only child had been killed in a motor accident.

It was as if he had returned, like a miracle.

The creature changed almost daily, sometimes looking for all the world like the son Fernandina lost, but other times resembling a young girl or even Fernandina herself. They called him Hydro, a name Nicolas chose after a trip to the United States where he came across comic books and recognised the amazing powers that his foster child possessed. Upon his return Nicolas began instructing Hydro in the ways of a human, in the ways of a hero.

Hydro learned quickly.

Hydro soon emerged as a super hero, preserving calm in San Salvador and opposing the rising threat of insurgence. It has been suggested that Hydro actually assisted with heading off a civil war during the early 1970s and was instrumental in foiling an attempt to kill the President. While actively fighting crime in El Salvador, Hydro rarely ventured out of his home country, although he appeared briefly in the United States, along California, during 1970-1971.

Personality

Hydro is an enigma. No one is sure exactly what it is, whether it is a magical creature or the result of mad science. Hydro was created in a laboratory accident, although there was evidence that CLAW had been developing a liquefying weapon. It has been hypothesised that Hydro was a lab assistant, reduced to a liquid state, although Hydro has no knowledge or interest in this. Another theory is that Hydro is an elemental creature brought to the Earth realm by accident.

Whatever its origin, Hydro is a peaceful and contemplative hero. Hydro's innocence and bravery have kept El Salvador in a relatively stable social and economic situation during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Hydro admires his 'parents' and they influence him greatly.

Quote

Hydro rarely speaks.

Powers

Hydro is composed of a semi-liquid form which is translucent and can take on the form of various humanoids, usually a young male or female form. Hydro can manipulate and extend its form to produce a protective field of water, project blasts of 'hydro-force' and fly. Hydro does not require air, food or sleep to exist and can survive under water at great depths. Hydro can perceive the world with the conventional five senses as well as a sonar. Hydro has proven to be quite difficult to injure, although Hydro has a well-known vulnerability to heat and cold.

Appearance

Hydro wears a stylised belt with a silver H on a blue buckle, but is otherwise naked although Hydro has no identifiable sexual characteristics. For a while Hydro also wore white shorts, but gave them up after a year of active superheroing.

Because of its liquid form, Hydro is able to shift its outer form to represent almost any kind of humanoid shape, most usually a clean-shaven young man or woman with long flowing hair. Hydro always appears chaste and innocent, outwardly reflecting its peaceful and caring personality.
