Sam had always had an affinity with plants. As a child, it was almost like he was able to picture what the trees, flowers and grasses were thinking or feeling. And the town of his childhood Sevenoaks, a little suburb outside of London in the UK, was full of trees and plants. They made him feel safe, welcome and never alone.

That's why when he reached 18 and headed off to university, he decided to study Plant Science and Botany at Oxford. Sam was an intelligent lad and, with his keen interest in plants, he passed his degree with flying colours. Interested in working to further the affairs of uberhumans, Sam travelled to the US and applied to the DUA. After review of his scientific knowledge and ability with plants, Sam was given a position in Division 3.

As part of his research study into using plants to help cure uberhuman aberrations, he went on a field trip to rainforests in Central America. It was on this field trip that Sam's own uberhuman abilities fully manifested themselves.

During a trek alone through the trees a snake bit him. Stumbling to the ground, Sam reached into his backpack for a syringe of plant-based universal anti-venom that he himself had created. In great pain as the venom worked its way into his system, Sam injected the full amount of the serum into his blood stream. The serum, along with the poison and the stress of the situation, had a bizarre effect on Sam. It activated a dormant ubergenetic twist in his DNA and suddenly his body grew and hardened. The flesh about his bones mutated, turning him into a huge creature made of flexible, durable wood.

This unearthly change made him incredibly strong and increased his endurance to superhuman levels. His bark-like skin was amazingly resilient to damage. His amazing wooden form was also able to slowly shrug off the effects of the poison. After a couple of hours, Sam eventually felt better. Concentrating, he'd turned back into human form and made his way back to base camp.

During his time studying the plant life in Central America, Sam managed to keep his transformation ability a secret. That was until an encounter brought him into conflict with a logging crew who were cutting down part of the forest. In his Oak form, Sam quickly saw off these destroyers of wildlife, smashing their machinery into pieces with his mighty fists.

His secret now revealed and realising that his vast powers could be put to better use, Sam moved back to Washington DC and applied to transfer from Division 3 to Division 10. There he hoped to more fully learn the extent of his powers in the Division 11 training program. Since then he has achieved much and has risen to the rank of a field agent within Division 10.

Since joining Division 10, Oak has defended the United States on numerous occasions. Oak's mighty strength has helped stop the madcap Oz Street Gang. He has defended downtown Washington D.C from the onslaught on giant robots. His vast intellect has helped investigate the inner workings of Richler Enterprises. He has fought the indestructible Weapon and hunted him to the ends of the Earth. Finally, he has helped apprehend the havoc causing, highly electrically charged Son of Richler.

However, after the apparent death of one of their number and the release of the Lightning Lad, all members of Division 10 were fired and replaced. Stunned at this sudden change of events, Director Wells took the ex-D10 members to a rundown barn and set up a private group of superheroes to help defend America.

As the rogue Division X, Oak and his teammates acted outside the law stopping a number of threats, including The Society for Human Preservation and an escaped Weapon. During the conflicts they often trod on the feet of and butted heads with (sometimes literally) their replacements in the government-funded D10. During this time, Oak found that the gap between his more human and wooden forms began to widen, the gulf becoming deeper with each encounter.

Sam concentrated on improving his medical knowledge and as he did his uberhuman DNA adapted, making his brain process information more quickly and his mind more intelligent. However, as Sam became cleverer, his tree-like alter ego became more of an unruly force of nature. In his wooden form, Oak's mind lost it's enhanced intelligence and would occasionally go berserk if any act of violence was inflicted on his botanical brethren. Oak grew stronger and was able to use this increased strength in new and destructive ways.

Eventually, the new Division 10 decided to stop the interference of the vigilante Division X. They confronted Oak and his teammates head on. The conflict was too much for Oak. Listening to the call of the plants around him, Oak issued a mighty earthquake-inducing roar and bounded away into the nearby forests. He needed time to calm his nature and slow the sap coursing around his veins. He needed the solitude of the plants and trees.

For weeks now, Oak has been out in the forests. He knows that the Earth needs him. He is just waiting for the call.

Sam is a usually quiet man who likes to be left on his own. In spite of this he is quite confident and his tall, broad muscle bound appearance lends an air of strength and intimidation to his character. When he does speak, Sam's voice is slow and deep, sounding like the voice an oak tree might have if it could speak.

In his Oak form, Sam becomes somewhat more animated, revelling in his increased strength and power. Strangely for a scientist, Sam's interests include sports and bodybuilding, and he can often be found either lifting weights in a gym or watching a football game in a bar. As would be expected for someone so in tune with plant life, he is also a strong environmentalist.

"Leave the rampaging, giant killer robots to me, okay?"

Samís body has been altered due to his inherent ubergene and further adapted after his experience with a reality-altering little girl. The result is that now Samís biology is mostly plant-based. His skin is tougher than normal, heís incredibly strong, and his physiology is based on that of a plant rather than a human. He therefore has the ability to photosynthesise and is able to heal wounds at a much faster rate than normal humans.

As the superhero Oak, his main power is the ability to grow and transform into a wooden, tree-like form. In this form, he becomes an unstoppable behemoth, growing to twelve foot in height whilst his body becomes unbelievably dense. This increases his normally incredible strength to superhuman proportions and his tough skin allows him to shrug off all types of attacks.

Oakís latest power is the ability to create and control. This gives him numerous abilities, such as creating entangling thickets of vines, super strong stalks to smash or lift people (including himself), and spiked thorns to cause harm to those that attack his teammates. Using this power he can also travel through the earth appearing wherever there is open, earthy ground or large plants. This new power has allowed him to help in the terraforming of various areas of barren land.

Sam is a tall, large man who, on close inspection, is made of wood. He is six and a half foot tall and broad and athletic of build. Well-defined, wooden muscles bulge from the man's arms, chest and legs like that of a part time body builder. Sam's figure is an imposing sight and his plant-based biology adds to his unnatural presence. His head is bald and his face is reasonably plain looking, with deep-set red eyes and a firm, square jaw. At times some have commented that he looks like a well-built version of Bruce Willis.

When he converts to his Oak form, his spongy plant-like flesh turns into tough bark, taking on a tough brown-hued rough texture. His body expands, growing to anywhere between 8 foot and 12 foot tall whilst his muscles enlarge to even greater proportions.

When not in costume, he tends to wear informal clothes of a sporting nature - football shirts and tracksuit trousers, or vest and shorts. He also sometimes wears a lab coat over the top of these when he is doing some scientific research. As the superhero Oak, he wears his old Division 10 outfit, which consists of a figure hugging green and brown costume that covers his torso and upper legs leaving his arms and head free. This costume is decorated with oakleaf-like designs down the side.
