Background

Antonio Téramond was famous for playing enigmatic, darkly seductive villains in Hollywood during the 1970s and early 1980s. Carlos was born, accidentally, to Antonio's third wife and managed to witness the actor's rapid decline in popularity and morals. Exotic pool parties were held in the Téramond compound with all kinds of guests from the famous faces of the day to the young girls who just got off the bus from Idaho. When Antonio was found dead of an overdose in 1990 it came as no surprise, especially to his shrinking circle of friends. Growing up in the Hollywood Hills was lonely for Carlos but he never seemed to be too upset about anything. Even before he reached Junior High Carlos discovered the beauty and magnificence of the beach and found a whole new positive world amongst the sand and surf. Carlos was a natural surfer, and with a mother who had more money than sense, he ended up with everything an aspiring surfer could want, including annual holidays to the great surf beaches of the world.

In 2001 Carlos was ranked third in the Junior World Surfing Rankings and had secured corporate sponsorship and a string of appearances on television shows targeting the youth market.

He was competing at Bells Beach in Australia when his life shifted again along its evolutionary groove. Carlos woke up late, having missed much of the initial chaos of early mornings sharing a house with three other young surfers, and found himself in bed with company. It wasn't a complete surprise, especially given the fact that none of the young surfers had a chaperone, but when Carlos noticed that the two other people under the blanket with him looked exactly like him, he was a little gobsmacked. Slowly the other two Carloses woke up and all three stared at each other dumbly. The blank expressions were soon transformed into knowing smiles as they slowly became aware of what had happened. He now knew that anything was possible.

Back on tour Carlos found that his interest in surfing was waning, and being replaced by a fascination for the emergence of superheroes and, more importantly, supervillains. He still enjoyed the rush of the waves, tapping the source, but when his secret ability to become ten times the man he was before, Carlos began to broaden his horizons. In the back of his collective mind, he envisioned himself as something of an action hero.

He examined his personal fortune, which was a combination of his tour winnings and the impressive fortune Antonio Téramond had left behind to his sole heir. He hired an agent in Hollywood and scored a few more television roles. He hired personal trainers, including a martial arts trainer. Naturally, his surfing rankings slid down the slippery pole and in early 2003 he quit the circuit to concentrate on television, and his secret desire to become a superhero.

In 2005 Carlos heard about the return of the Olympians and made his way to Florida. With a secret identity, a history of action roles on television and his desire to become a superhero, Carlos sent in his application.

And was rejected.

Carlos hadn't experienced rejection before, so he decided that he would just have to find a way to circumvent the natural process of things and join the team with or without their permission. Carlos was, after all, a superhero, and the Olympians were the only team in town with any kind of class. Tribe was going to be an Olympian.

He just needed an edge.

After eventually proving to the Olympians that he was actually an asset, Carlos became a member of the team and was involved in a variety of adventures. During one adventure he was sucked through a portal into the Uberworld, specifically Detroit.

 

Personality

Carlos is a laid-back guy without many grudges against life or people. He naturally gets along with people and doesn't take much notice of things when they go sour. He is an optimist although he is in a privileged position, having a personal fortune and the luxury of doing what he wants when he wants. He doesn't seem to really understand that life isn't as easy for most people, so he goes through life thinking the best of everyone and every situation.

Some might consider him an air head, but what he lacks in mental astuteness he more than makes up with people skills. He is affable and enjoys life. His personality is either infectious or irritating, depending on the mood of those he is with.

Unlike most other people, though, Carlos shares a unique bond with his 'Tribe' and often has silent conversations amongst his communal mind which can be unsettling for those who spend any length of time with him. Carlos sees this communication as the natural way, and even goes so far as to consider his 'tribal conversations' as something of a living and conversing conscience.

"Some people say that three's a crowd, right, but you don't really get crowded until there's like ten or twelve talking all at once, you know? [taps head] In your head. Or, like, in a room too, because when there's that many around, people just get confused about who's who and who owes them money and stuff."

(Tribe to Villain): "Hey, that's a really cool costume. Did you do that yourself, 'coz if you did, you could really make some money out of that. Seriously."

"There's a rumour around that the Olympians knocked me back for membership. It's kind of funny really. I mean, they practically begged me to join. I can't really tell you much about my life before becoming one of America's favourite heroes, but let's just say I was pretty famous, so when they asked me if I could help them out I really had to weigh up my choices. I mean, money's one thing, but serving one's country and bringing justice to those less fortunate is another thing. Of course I agreed to help them out, and boy are they glad I did. Already, since joining, I think I've saved their collective bacon about six times. You could say I'm the one who is always there, no matter where the danger shows its ugly mug. And when I'm there, you just know the good guys are gonna win."

 

Powers

Carlos is a duplicator. He is able to produce exact duplicates of himself which are then able to operate independently of himself. All duplicates share a mind link which enables instantaneous communication, although it also enables mental attacks to carry through the link and affect all simultaneously. Carlos is still getting used to his powers, and is constantly amazed with what he can do, but at present he has a limit of about fifteen duplicates at any one time.

Recently he has decided to utilise his powers in a way to protect his identity and, ultimately, his life. He has sent three duplicates to different cities across the world where they are currently living out their own lives and serve as deep covers and life insurance. As long as there is at least one Carlos, there is the potential for more. He has sent duplicates to Spain, Costa Rica and New York City where they live as entertainers and musicians, although their main purpose is to enjoy themselves and keep their heads down.

 

Appearance

Carlos is a handsome man, which is good because he doesn't have much in the way of brains. His father was Costa Rican and he has an olive complexion and dark brown hair, which he currently keeps cropped in his main identity.

As Tribe, he wears a black costume which is made of bullet-proof material and designed by a stunt company in Los Angeles. It is primarily black but has a stylised tribal symbol on the chest and the word Tribe written along his shoulders on his back. He wears shades to keep his identity a secret, although he really doesn't care all that much about leading separate lives. It's more of a token gesture for the superhero world.
