Background

Rohan-Gerardi's father worked himself to death in Detroit, leaving behind Lewis and his three brothers to look after themselves.  He never knew his mother, and never forgave her for leaving him.  Lewis was the eldest of the brothers and while many of those around him put pressure on to drop out of high school and find work to support the family, Lewis ignored them and pursued his studies with a grim determination.  He got accepted into college and abandoned his brothers, all of whom ended up in foster care.  Lewis believes that the only way for him to survive was to rid himself of his 'anchor'.  At college, he met Chloe van Duijen and immediately fell in love with her.  She never returned the feelings for Lewis, considering him something of a little brother.  She moved on and left Lewis to complete his studies, but he never forgot about her.

After college, Lewis found work in a Detroit newspaper and moved back home where he found out that his brothers had been scattered across the continental United States.  His work was dull and his superiors were dictatorial.  Lewis became jaded and began to sabotage his own stories in the hope that he would be fired.  But his superiors never noticed the blatant plagiarism or misquoted information.

Then one day he heard a conversation within the mind of his superior: a replayed memory which was troubling the editor.  Lewis was suddenly privy to the man's darkest secrets, and feeling particularly mercenary Lewis immediately blackmailed the man.  As he became increasingly aware of his powers, Lewis began to extend his field of blackmail, reaching into the areas of local government, law enforcement and even the Detroit underworld.  Within a year he was made editor of the newspaper and he had an undeclared income of over $200,000.

It was ironic that Lewis' intricate web of deceit was uncovered by a junior member of the newspaper.  The cadet journalist took the story to the national papers and Lewis Rohan-Gerardi's story was splashed across the country.  He tried to escape, and during the bitter conflicts that followed, Lewis and a team of anti-uber special agents, including the specialist Saul Numen, battled each other across the Detroit cityscape.  Once Saul subdued him, the police moved in.  The federal police arrested him and he was sent to prison after a public trial.

In jail he met with Josh Tippet, a low-level uber known as Undertow, who would later become his partner.  During his incarceration, Lewis' powers seemed to magnify, fuelled by his growing anger and hatred for the law enforcement agents who captured him.  The authorities were completely unprepared for the increase in Lewis' powers and he easily overcame the entire facility.  With Undertow's assistance, Lewis escaped and became Brainwave.  Within weeks he had succeeded in robbing several banks and opposing half the Sanction team single-handedly.

Brainwave and Undertow were eventually joined by Ahriman, and it was at this time that Brainwave killed the hero Viridian and stole his power suit.  With some modifications made by Ahriman, Brainwave now had an even greater arsenal with which to take on the world.  He now possessed uberhuman strength in a mental and a physical sense.

Since being defeated by Saul Numen, Brainwave cradled a growing desire for revenge, and when he discovered that his old flame, Chloe, had married Saul and produced children, Brainwave was devastated and sought ultimate revenge.  The New Men and Maximum Force clashed on several occasions, but the greatest victory for Brainwave came in Africa where he gained completed mental control over the family.  His initial thought was to kill Saul and the children, but Ahriman convinced him to wipe their minds and scatter them across the world to suffer alone.

This appealed to Brainwave's sense of justice, but he wasn't completely surprised when Chloe broke the mental bonds he had placed on her and gathered up her family.  The New Men got their revenge on Brainwave and he was sent to prison for a second time.  This time his powers were negated.  Ahriman managed to escape, however, and rescued his partners.

Maximum Force has continued to cause chaos and strife across North America and Europe, and Brainwave still seeks revenge on Saul Numen.

Personality
Brainwave considers himself far beyond the abilities of normal humans.  It is a superiority based on the belief that everyone else is simply operating on a much lower level of understanding than Brainwave.  He believes the world can still function, and he has no particular desire to rule everything, but he does believe that the rules set out by these inferior people does not apply to him.
Quote
"The mind is such a soft thing, so easily crafted and so easily torn asunder."
Powers

Brainwave is one of the premier telepaths of the world.  He is able to completely rewrite memories and manipulate the mental faculties of people around him.  It has been suggested that his powers will continue to increase until such a point that he will become one with the world around him, no longer needing a physical body.  At this time, however, Brainwave is very much a human.  He has the same vulnerabilities as everyone, except that he has attempted to remedy the situation by utilising a powered armor suit once belonging to the solo hero Viridian.  The suit allows him protection against most attacks, increased strength and the ability to fly and project blasts of super-charged plasma.

Appearance

Brainwave wears the stolen Viridian suit.  It is dark green with a lighter green starscape imposed over the top.  He wears a visor to conceal his identity, although it is common knowledge that Brainwave is Lewis Rohan-Gerardi.  Out of costume, Lewis appears to be an imposing man in his forties.  His eyes command attention and he walks with the poise of a man who knows that he is superior to all around him.
