"Valiex Karne was an alien gladiator on a distant planet ruled by an autocratic emperor. When she fell into imperial disfavor, she fled to Earth to escape the emperor's agents. Going by the code name Shooting Star, Valiex now uses her powers of cosmic energy generation to protect the people of her adopted homeworld. Fitting into Earth society is difficult for her, so she values her teammates highly. Romantic feelings for Christopher have begun to awaken in Valiex, but she isn't prepared to acknowledge them yet. Charisma urges her to explore them, but Valiex resists." ('Fatal Attractions', page 49)

The alien character of Valiex Karne has become one of the cult favorites of the show, launching over one thousand fan websites and she has been flooded by fans at annual sci-fi conventions. Since Silver Bullet's 'coming out' Valiex has been forced to find the seeds of romance elsewhere and writers have presented her with a series of flawed suitors, most of whom turn out to be agents from the emperor or just plain old insane supervillains.

Lara Domburg is a television presenter with a career including time spent at the news desk in Chicago, several documentaries including two on aliens and alien civilisations, as well as the host of one-off specials usually involving trivia competitions, and even more usually to do with science fiction. Domburg has worked in film on two occasions since becoming famous as Shooting Star, both of which were mildly successful science fiction films.

She married actor Kacey Trask in 2003 and has a son, Yale Trask, who is three years old. The producers of the show modified Valiex's body during the pregnancy with a storyline which saw the alien put on nearly three tonnes, the result of prolonged exposure to Earth's pollutants. She was 'cured' after the birth of her son, and went back to being a sexy alien gladiator. While she dotes on little Yale, Domburg has no intention of going back for a second child.

Lara Domburg is renowned for her sense of humour and laid-back attitude, the result she says of being the fifth and youngest child in a poor family; honed to a razor point by her recent experiences as a mother of a toddler. She is a professional actor and presenter, deferring to the production crew in all matters. She must sit through at least two hours of makeup every day to recreate the alien visage of Shooting Star, but Domburg does this with endless patience and a smile.

"By the Seven Moons of Azora, this is no ordinary tank!"

Shooting Star possesses the 'heart of a star' which grants her almost limitless power over cosmic energy. Over the years this power has intensified to such a point that the writers can basically write anything and her powers will easily match the challenge. She has even succeeded in altering the moon's orbit after it was knocked off course by a devastating attack meant for Earth. Shooting Star is prone to introspective monologues and doubts her abilities more than she should, especially considering her raw power and the sometimes overlooked fact that she was a hardened gladiator on her home planet.

Shooting Star is a green skinned alien with sensitive antennae on her forehead and almond-shaped eyes reminiscent of classic portrayals of aliens (obviously based more on 1950s culture than any real alien species since encountered). She wears a miniskirt and short emblazoned with a shooting star.

Lara Domburg is an unassuming woman in her thirties with short bobbed brown hair and bright blue eyes. She wears casual clothes more often than not and appears to be a very modest and pleasant woman.
