Background

A dozen of the vicious teen ubers could be seen in the pile next to the window. Occasionally, a larger fist hammered into the pile from the two-headed two-bodied brute. Her husband was under it all getting pummeled by fists, scratched with claws, seared with fire. Through the window, Rei could see the clouds pulling away and the moon beginning to shine through. A cool spring breeze touched the room.

She had pushed Kazeo and Toshiko to the corner of the room, shielding them from harm with her own body. Kaemon would have her run with the children as he attempted to repulse the attack. But, the man in the fancy red armor had cut off her escape and backed them into a corner.

"I know who you are, Rei Yanahiro," said the man. "Know that I am a geneticist, although I call myself Vaterschmerz now. I know, too, that your mother was Neko-no-Kage a strong uberhuman..."

That was a name that Rei had been trying to forget for years now. Her mother had been slain in an intense fight with the Moon Warrior when she had tried to assassinate the Prime Minister of Japan and three of his colleagues. A cruel woman her mother was, and a slave driver to her two daughters. Rei could never forgive her, even dead, for her childhood and for the death of Junko, her sister. The best she could do was try to forget.

After Neko-no-Kage's body was cremated, Rei was able to fully pursue her childhood ambitions and became a photographer. It was demanding work that didn't pay very well, but she loved it nonetheless. She took pictures of families, children, and weddings for portraits. That made enough to pay the rent and put rice in her bowl. But, her true passion was pictures of nature, particularly of people in natural settings and animals in natural settings.

Her life turned around one night when she was taking pictures of the full moon through the pine forested hills outside of Osaka. A man was there standing on a small mound, talking, it seemed, to the moon. She took several pictures, and, when he was done talking to the moon, the Moon Warrior approached her. She knew of him, but have never met, even though he had played a large part in the psychological healing process of overcoming her mother's abuse. They talked, and it seemed that a bond formed.

Over the next several months, they fell in love and then married. She knew that Kaemon Hiuma was a crimefighter - a superhero - and she knew what she was getting into. Or at least she thought that she did.

"... Your sister was, too. You have the gene yourself, but it seems as if it shall never manifest," said Vaterschmerz. "I shall adopt your children and ensure that their ubergene comes to fruition. They shall be the Captains of the new Reich. Stand aside, woman!"

The crescent moon shone brightly through the window now. A handful of petals from the cherry tree blew in the wind and a few landed on the pile. This vile man and his gang chose the wrong day to do this. She knew that Kaemon would come through. He needed time, though. Rei peered defiantly at the would-be kidnapper and glared, "No! My children shall be free to live their lives as they desire. No one will tell them lies. None will command them through manipulation and deceit. If they gain powers, they will use it only if they want to. And they will always be gently guided by their parents to be champions of the weak."

The melee near the window shifted, a sword was raised in the midst of it. But then everything was obscured as a gauntleted hand bore down upon Rei. Searing pain wracked her body from head to toe. She convulsed under the assault on her nerves. But, despite the intensity of it, Rei managed to stand up and push Vaterschmerz backward even if it was slightly.

She saw Kaemon's katana Kiyoitsukikage, casting flickers in the moonlight as he scattered die Kinder and Liebwachter. Vaterschmerz had to turn and face the Moon Warrior. Rei seized her children and carried them out of the living room, down the hall, and into the safe room.

The sounds of the battle had died and yet, Kaemon did not return. Rei left the children with her in-laws in the safe room and searched through the halls. At last, she found him burned and battered in the courtyard, cherry blossoms scattered on his body, but his faint breathing told her that he was alive, if just barely. He smiled and whispered, "the children are safe."

Moon Warrior recovered from the attack, and was soon called by an old friend, Bill Chun, known also as the outlaw hero Freedom. There were children to be saved and Bill asked Kaemon to help. That was when Kaemon and Rei had the first big argument of their marriage. She had always supported his superheroics, but after the attack by the Kinder, she began to fear for his life. Kaemon left in the middle of the night, he always had trouble denying help to children.

By morning, six heroes were gathered at Izuchi Castle and they were getting ready to set out for Hong Kong. But, Rei did not let them leave the room without her, physically placing herself at the doorway. She was going to go, too. Just when she and Kaemon were about to start a heated argument, Kaemon's brother, Rinji - Doctor Boom, said that he had a suit that she could use. It was functional, though still in development. Seeing the commitment in his wife's eyes, the Moon Warrior agreed. She had the stuff to be a hero.

Personality

Despite her pain, Rei tries to make the most of her life; she is passionate, energetic, and intense. She continues her photography business, selling pictures to the media or at art shows. She is an exemplary mother. And, she works hard at being a superheroine although, at times, she feels like she has to show that she can be one, especially considering that her husband is one of Japan's premiere superheroes and that the rest of the Shichinin-no-Yuushi team are either born with powers or are longtime heroes.

Quote

"You really need to see the light."

Powers

Rei has no real powers of her own, her ubergene is still dormant. But the Sunshine powered armor, made by Doctor Boom, allows her to face supervillains despite the pain and physical sensitivity. The suit's signature "Sunshine" makes her difficult to target especially when close. The offensive capabilites are primarily derived from her fingertip laser array. The passive defenses are bolstered by active systems that have been added to buffer blows that would trigger Rei's pain sensitivity. While all powered systems work in darkness as well as light, they recharge much more slowly.

Appearance

Rei is a petite woman with an elfin face. When not on a mission, she will be found in jeans, a pastel-colored blouse and tennis shoes. The Sunshine powered armor is mostly charcoal gray solar panels studded with miniature (nearly pinpoint) halogen lights. The fingertips of each hand house the laser system.
