Background

Joca Vanderkooi is a person who has been reborn numerous times throughout her life.

The details of her actual birth were unknown, but she was raised by a well-off couple in Heerenveem in the Netherlands. She grew up happy and healthy on their horse farm, learning to ride even before she could walk. She loved the horses, loved the work, and just generally loved her life – but even then, she seemed always to be searching for something more.

Her powers manifested early – they were there from birth, most likely, but became more obvious as time went on. Joca was resistant to most physical harm; a fall from a horse that would break bones on anyone else, would leave her merely bruised. She was fast and strong, and incredibly focused, even as a child. She loved to learn, and did it well.

On her eleventh birthday, a gift arrived at their door. It was wrapped only with a bow, and had a tag with Joca’s name on it. Opening it revealed a full length white cloak. Upon closer inspection, the cloak appeared to be made entirely of large white feathers. It looked familiar to her, and when the young Joca touched it, she felt an instinctive connection to the item. It was sized for the adult Joca would become, but that didn’t stop the child from enjoying the unusual gift.

It was not long before she realized that her cloak, like Joca herself, was more than it seemed. It granted its wearer the ability of flight. From that time forward, Joca began to truly understand that some greater destiny lay in store for her – it was simply a matter of being prepared to meet it.

Such a realization would have been too much for most children of eleven to bare, but Joca was not like most children. She simply began to train, to practice, for whatever might come. At first, she simply honed her physical abilities – but she quickly progressed beyond that. She convinced her parents to let her study the martial arts, and was an accomplished master with two different weapons by the time she finished high school.

In the mean time, two more gifts had appeared – a spear and a sword. When she turned 18, Joca decided she was ready to begin her tenure as a hero. She quickly became known as Valkyrie, and her fame spread. For three years, she was one of the Netherlands’ premier defenders. While not much of a fan of media attention, her long list of successes still drew attention.

As such, her first defeat hit her very hard. A confrontation with the Dirty Deeds went poorly for her, and Valkyrie barely escaped with life. Thankfully, the incident never went public, but it shook Joca to the core. Nursing her wounds, she retreated from the world.

Nearly a year later, she received a visit from a strange woman claiming to be her maternal grandmother – and claiming to be Freyja, the Norse goddess who also led the mythical Valkyries. Intuitively, Joca knew these outrageous claims to be true.

Her grandmother’s visit provided the motivation needed for Joca to return to being a hero – still Valkyrie, but changed in her outlook and methods. She was more driven, more focused, than she had ever been.

When she was 28, the original Dawnstars team was created, with Valkyrie an integral part of it. Two years later, when Medusa resigned as leader of the team, Valkyrie assumed the mantle of leadership. She led the team for only a few months before the Dawnstars were permanently disbanded by the EU. During her brief tenure as leader, 11 members of the Dawnstars staff were killed, including the Dawnstars’ youngest member, Eternity.

Blaming herself, Joca returned to the Netherlands and shut out the world outside her borders. Valkyrie stayed active within the Netherlands, but never strayed outside its boundaries. Working as a solo hero, she believed she could prevent her mistakes from killing anyone else.

Another two years passed before a phone call shattered her carefully rebuilt world. One of the former Dawnstars had been murdered. Before she fully understood the situation, two more of her former teammates were dead, and a third missing. She called together the remains of the Dawnstars, and, with the aid some new heroes, they were able to unearth and put a stop to the plot against them.

But, in the final battle against their enemies, Joca was defeated by a demon called Armageddon. When she fell, another of the Dawnstars was taken by the demon. Joca was nearly given up for dead, but her deific blood regenerated her body enough that she could be saved.

Her ancestry could not repair the damage done to her mentally, however. The death that seemed to constantly surround her was too much for her, and so while the Dawnstars reformed, she left Venice for good.

At least, so she thought. But the world was still in need of heroes, and Valkyrie could not resist its call for long.

Personality

There was a time in her life when Joca was outgoing and friendly. That side of her was lost, somewhere among the bodies of her friends and comrades. Since she left Venice and the Dawnstars after her battle with Armageddon, she has been, at best, a quiet and introspective person. Her personality when ‘off the job’ has been sliding towards how she has always been as Valkyrie; intense, driven, and a perfectionist to the core. She believes that there is no reason to do something if it isn’t going to be done right. Her perfectionist nature sometimes annoys the people she works with, but she drives herself far harder and expects far more from herself than she does from anyone else.

Powers

While Valkyrie is descended from a goddess, her actual powers are relatively few. They consist of her ability to shrug off large amounts of physical damage, her natural athleticism, and her fighting abilities. She is very strong, and incredibly fast and agile. Her abilities with swords and spears are extraordinary, and are still continuing to improve.

The majority of her abilities stem from the gifts bestowed upon her by her grandmother, the Norse goddess Freyja. Her sword and spear are both of exceptional quality, and possess some abilities that even Joca is not yet aware of. Her shield will seemingly deflect any kind of ranged attack, without exception. And her cloak, the first and most treasured of her gifts, grants her the ability of flight.

Appearance

Joca is an attractive woman with long, curly blonde hair and blue eyes. While she is in her late thirties, she looks barely a day past 21. When not on duty, she almost always wears loose faded jeans, a long sleeved shirt, and paddock boots (short leather riding boots). Standing a lithe 5’7” tall, her looks are marred only by the numerous scars on her body. The most noticeable of these scars is a long, thin scar running down the left side of her face just below her cheekbone, from her hairline almost to her mouth. She will not talk about where she received the scars, but it is apparent that whatever caused the scar on her face was a blow that could have just as easily cost her an eye, or taken her life.

Valkyrie’s costume consists of a custom made half suit of armour and a winged helm, both designed more for looks than for protection. On her legs she wears a floor length skirt that is slit up both sides for ease of movement, and sandals that lace up almost to her knees. Completing the outfit is a cloak covered in white swan feathers. At her waist she carries her sword, with her spear and shield both slung across her back.
