Thomas Newton-Tyson was a soldier in a combat engineer battalion of the North Carolina National Guard. He was training on the use of remotely controlled robots in handling explosive materials and defusing explosives. Not very good with computers, he was having difficulties with the controls and caused an explosive-defusing robot carrying a block of C4 to do something near a stack of cannisters containing chemicals. 'Messy' would be a mild way to describe the results.

The captain and two other soldiers who were training with Thomas died instantly from the explosion. But Thomas disintegrated and was still alive. He found himself spread over the training facility and thought that he was dead, but soon realized that something had changed him. The explosion, the chemicals, maybe he was even a mutant - whatever it was, he was a large gas cloud.

It took him an hour to pull himself together and condense into his normal human form. But whenever he got tired, he would be unable to control his energy and would explode. He finally made his way to his hometown, but that was a disaster. He exploded, killing his girlfriend. When he sought his parents for help and support, he exploded again, killing them.

It was all the fault of that stupid computer and the damn chemicals. He hated all of it. His girlfriend and parents dead, he went on a rampage, destroying power stations, office building, and factories. He finally stopped when a mysterious woman named Nemesis spoke to him, explaining her own predicament and those of her friends. They could help Thomas. He could help them.


Thomas's life is governed by his hatred of technology and users of technology. In this day and age, that's just about everybody. If he had a choice, he'd destroy everything and bring the world back to the pre-industrial early 19th century. As it is, he feels that he has a debt to Nemesis and will generally do what she says.


"I'm about to explode!"


TNT packs an explosive punch. While he usually can contain himself except when tired, occasionally he lets himself explode. After such an event, he has to pull his gaseous molecules together and condense back into human form.


TNT wears red tights with white and blue stripes on his torso. In the middle of his chest is his personal insignia, an exploding stick of dynamite and he has a Seven Soldiers patch on his shoulder. He has black tights as pants along with a white belt and red boots. Out of costume, he prefers to wear a plaid longsleeved shirt and jeans.
