Not all uberhumans wear costumes and use codenames. Some choose, instead, to use their powers of mind control to make themselves rich and powerful in more subtle fashion. One such person lives in Atlanta, Georgia. Despite his decision not to use a flashy name, let's call him Mindworm. In addition to his ability to dominate the minds of others, he was clever and ruthless. When mind control alone wasn't enough, compelling others to reveal their dirty secrets to him so he could use more conventional methods of coercion such as blackmail worked well. As did taking hostages; the hostages were always cooperative, never needed guarding and cheerfully denied their status if questioned. If they were young, attractive women, well--that was just a bonus.

Cassandra Sugarbaker was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Her father was a prominent and well-respected attorney and her mother came from old money. They were rich, successful, happy. Cassandra was taught how to move in high society and introduced to that society in a traditional "coming out" party when she was sixteen. Alas, one of the prominent citizens invited to the party was Mindworm, who took a shine to Cassandra--and she to him, of course.

Cassandra moved in with her new beau after the party. Her parents were allowed to disapprove, but did nothing to interfere. The usual pattern was for Mindworm to enjoy his current playmate for a few days or weeks, then discard her. He would have done the same with Cassandra save that she was present when someone tried to kill him. Mindworm had, of course, carefully conditioned her--as he did all his subjects--to protect his life at all costs. Cassandra leaped in between Mindworm and the assassin. It's a toss-up which of the three of them was more surprised when the bullets bounced harmlessly off of her body. Mindworm recovered first. The assassin cheerfully revealed who had sent him and then killed himself.

Mindworm forced Cassandra to test the limits of her newly revealed powers. They learned together what she was capable of. He'd been about to send her away, but he was thrilled to find that he now had his very own uberhuman slave. Cassandra spent most of a year with him as his bodyguard and enforcer. She did a lot of violent things, terrible things, and Mindworm told her she liked doing them. It ended when they were ambushed by a large group of Mindworm's growing list of enemies; he sicced Cassandra on them and fled. She fought long and hard, but she wasn't the only uberhuman in the brawl and she was beaten badly.

She woke up in a hospital, under arrest. Her parents were on the way to see her. The police and representatives of a host of other organizations had numerous questions for Cassandra. She'd been away from Mindworm long enough for his influence to fade--but she remembered being his willing accomplice, enjoying doing all the horrible things he asked of her. She knew intellectually that it was his doing, but emotionally...that was another matter. Cassandra couldn't face her parents.

She might have managed to overcome the shame and guilt and see her parents--until Mindworm breezed into her hospital room, past the smiling cooperative cops posted at the door. Cassandra threw the bedside table at him before he could say a word and launched herself through the window, terrified that he'd call her back before she could escape. She got away, but now she didn't dare to resume her life. She didn't even dare contact her parents--Mindworm wouldn't hesitate to use them as leverage. The only way to keep them safe was to make sure he was never able to communicate with her, even through them.

Cassandra fled Atlanta. She fled Georgia, traveling by night, getting as far from Atlanta as she could get. Eventually she reached Seattle; she could go no farther without entering another country. She settled there, careful to avoid the police and otherwise remain under the radar while she learned her way around the city as well as how to survive on the streets. That's how she ran into the Outsiders and joined them.

Cassandra is a very confused young woman. She knows intellectually that she was under the thrall of a mind controlling scumbag, but what she remembers is loving him, and willingly doing whatever he suggested. She remembers gleefully assaulting and beating people at his behest, stealing and robbing people, threatening and coercing them to do his bidding. She hates him; if she would kill anyone, it would be him. But she's also terrified of falling under his influence again--or the influence of some other mind controller. Nightmares about her experience are common, and she tends toward insomnia as a result, and thinking too much about it leads to brooding so she tries to keep herself busy. One of the ways in which she keeps busy is voraciously reading science fiction, fantasy and pulp novels.

"You have _no idea_ what I'm capable of."

Cassandra possesses a powerful but limited telekinetic ability. She can easily manipulate anything she can touch, but cannot as yet extend her telekinetic powers beyond her reach. Thus, she can exert superhuman strength on any object she can touch, without regard for its bulk, size or any lack of handholds. Her limited telekinetic ability allows her to protect herself from attacks, creating a powerful forcefield. She can also fly, though she tends to keep this ability a secret from everyone else, choosing instead to use her telekinetic powers to enhance her movement more subtly, boosting her running and swimming speed, to make phenomenal "leaps" and to cling to vertical surfaces.

Cassandra is slightly taller than average for her age, and heavier than is currently fashionable. Unkind individuals might call her fat, though they would have to overlook her hourglass figure in the process. She has long, curly dark hair, green eyes and a round face. She was once a clothes horse, though her current circumstances don't allow it. She tends to wear dark colors--black by preference--so as make herself as invisible as possible when she goes out at night. She keeps a backpack with a "flying outfit" stashed atop one of the city's taller buildings, where no one is likely to find it. It consists heavyweight clothing, gloves and a balaclava for warmth (the night sky is cold at high altitudes, even in summer).
