Background

Starhawk - Jaya Dayanti – From Denpasar (Biak 5) –The Denpasari are widely believed by Union geneticist to be a construct race. That is their genetic make up was created by some group in the ancient past. There is no natural explanation for their specific form and their genome and cellular structures contain several anomalies, inexplicable to modern geneticists. The UCW has placed the entire Biak system under a Class II quarantine, preventing commercial and most scientific contact. There are occasion visits by Union ships or government sponsored investigation teams. But other than that the people are left more or less to their own devices. The Denpasari have achieved a pre-industrial native technology level, with some pockets of more advanced steam power and some pockets of outworld technology. Culturally the Denpasari are split into numerous theocratic hegemonies that were feuding as recently as two generations ago. Upon discovery by the Union scout ships the feuds ended as the theologs all shared a vision of danger from beyond the world and were given a mandate to prepare the people to fight the coming evil.

Trained from birth in the military arts and sciences to be a war leader of her people, Jaya led them in a loosing battle against space pirates, only to have her planet saved at the last minute by a Galactic Guard ship. She realized the insular culture of her people was endangering them. She took it upon herself to go out in to the galaxy and do what she could to protect her people there. As she passed through Denpsar's famous wings, strange radiation fields that surround the planet, quantum structures in her system activated, granting her almost limitless powers. She can transform into a creature of pure energy to fly among the stars. She can channel the energy through her body, enhancing her own attributes or projecting energy in various forms.

She is officially the ambassador of her people to the UCW, but she has spent the last 15 standard years working with the Stellar Shield to protect the Union. She now sees all sentients as her people and works to protect them from those that would do them harm.

Personality
Jaya is a generally happy, friendly being. She enjoys the camaraderie of the Shield. She misses her people and her home, but she is not comfortable there. Since gaining her powers she has been treated like an Avatar of the Gods by her people. She thinks they may be right, but is embarrassed by the conceit. She enjoys her position in the Shield. She thrives on the constant training and combat opportunities. She is somewhat less comfortable with the public relations part of the job, but is a skilled and effective speaker. She continues to act as the ambassador for her people and feels very protective of them and of all developing worlds. She takes every opportunity she can to speak out in favor of their rights and benefits. She also caries a particular grudge against space pirates and slavers. They have long been a bane of her people and she remembers the battle when her people were almost wiped out.

Powers

Starhawk has the ability to assume a body of almost pure energy. While in her energy form, a glowing, blazing bird-shaped manifestation about the size of a small airbus, Starhawk is somehow attuned to the quantum field of the universe. She can manipulate and project almost any form of energy. She can fly at superluminal speeds. She is almost indestructible as she has no real physical form and can regenerate by absorbing other energy sources . On the other hand she is not able to physically affect things, except through her energy fields. One of her most peculiar abilities is that once she has come in contact with someone, she can track them across the reaches of interstellar space. She has to concentrate, but she can find her prey almost anywhere.

In her normal form, Jaya shares the avian/humanoid hybrid form of her race. It is obvious to evolutionary biologists that her people were engineered for both flight and superior resilience and endurance. No one is exactly sure by whom or why.

In either form Jaya is a skilled tracker, tactician, and leader.

Appearance

Starhawk's normal form is a female humanoid, approximately 178cm in height and weighing a surprising 43kg. She has vestigial wings under her arms which can be used for gliding, a muscular figure, and large wide-set eyes. She has no hair but her surprisingly human-like face is crowned by a tuft of brightly colored feathers. She dyes these on occasion so the color changes. Her hands are have three fingers and an opposable thumb. What may have once been a fourth finger makes up part of her wings. Her toes are particularly long and can grasp almost anything wiht surprising strength. Her races similarity in appearance to Terran humans has been investigated with no results.
