Background

: “Roland flight this is launch control.” The radio crackled. “We have all green lights – ready to launch.”

With that, Commander Gustavo Uribe pushed a series of buttons and the Argus Space Plane’s booster engines pushed against the earth. Slowly, it pulled away from the planet. Uribe had spent every moment of his military career working toward this moment. Years in the Spanish Air Force and then years more working at EU Space Command in Athens.

He had been passed over for the first two flights he had qualified for, but today ... the Roland ... was his to pilot. His entire body shook as the space plane continued for fight gravity. He wished that his father could see this.

Minutes later, the Roland had finished its turn and had jettisoned its booster rockets. “Control, this is Roland ... we have the stick.” Uribe said. For the next eight days, the Roland orbited the earth; linking up with the International Space Station and making repairs to three EU satellites.

(Eight Days Later)

“Roland to Control – we are locked into Stuttgart Recovery Station. We are starting re-entry.” Uribe said. Having thoroughly enjoyed the trip, Gustavo was sad to see it end, but adrenaline pumped through his arteries as he prepared to bring the ship back to earth.

“Copy Roland ... you’re radio black for the next 120 seconds.” Control said, “Stuttgart will pick you up when you’re back.”

Uribe clicked his mic twice to signal that he understood, then put both his hands on the stick. “Places everyone.” He said back to his crew; he looked over to his co-pilot and they shared a smile.

****** (eighty seconds later)

Something had hit them. The unknown radar contact that his co-pilot had mentioned just before. Gustavo felt fire and cold running up each leg; his mind tried to react to the alarm claxons he heard ... but his body would not react. In the distance, he heard the screams of his crewmates ... and something else. Something alien.

****** (Crash plus 10 minutes)

Gustavo felt pain throughout his body. He looked around and thought that he should be feeling the fire. Everyone else onboard was dead. He knew that he needed to get out of the ship before something else went wrong. The next thing he knew, he was floating several meters above the wreck of the Roland. He felt his mind controlling forces around him. He looked at his hand ... it was ... silver. ‘My God,’ he thought, ‘what am I?’

‘No.’ An alien presence thought back, ‘What are we?’

Personality

Quantum is new to his powers. He was not born with them, nor did he ask for them. He often feels out of place fighting with the Dawnstars team members. He is searching for the whys of his powers and slowly learning to control them.

Gustavo was a military man, disciplined and organized. Now, he has lost some of that. He tends to act on impulse. He finds it somewhat disconcerting that sometimes his powers respond to his unconscious desires rather than his conscious will. He often seems disconnected from the rest of humanity.

Gustavo is unknowingly inhabited by an extraterrestrial symbiotic energy being. The being was forced into Gustavo when its ship crashed into the Roland and it was shunted into this physical dimension. The interaction between Gustavo and the being created Quantum. The relationship quickly became true symbiosis as neither can survive without the other. The energy being keep Gustavo’s body alive and without the body to serve as host in this physical dimension, the energy being would die.

Gustavo is slowly becoming aware of the new person inside of him. And the two are coming to grips with each other.

Powers

In some cosmic accident, Gustavo Uribe died and was reborn as a cosmic entity. He has control over gravity, as well as a developing control over light. He can use this control to affect changes to the gravity of people or areas: allowing him to create a gravity well in front of himself to fly; or temporarily increase the gravity of a person causing them harm.

To do this, Gustavo much shift into his “Quantum” form. This form alters his physical appearance into a silver covered humanoid, he is also more durable and faster in this Quantum form. Doctors believe that this is Gustavo’s new “true” form and that he transforms back into his old self only as a way of mentally compensating for what has happened. Namely, that he died and has been re-animated by some alien force.

Appearance

Gustavo has a thin, athletic build jet black hair and a dark complexion. He tends to dress nicely, but not overly so. He wears no jewelry. When he has transformed into Quantum, he is much taller. His skin is silver and he is bald.
