Background

From a Romani (Gypsy) family, Tarina was nearly outcast from the moment of her birth. Her light tan fur, unusual ears, enlarged incisors, deep black eyes, would have made her unclean but she had a quality about her that endeared her to those around her. Thus she stayed with the female members of her family and those close female family friends. Even though she had limited contact with anyone else, rumors about her being some kind of bat creature or vampire spread throughout her tribe bringing simmering fear and hatred to her family. The rumors were hard to dispel as Tarina preferred her meat bloody and often animals around the tribe would be found wounded and weak.

Finally the tribe encountered one of the a traveling circus and while entertaining the staff, it was decided that Tarina would be traded to the troupe for a large supply of goods and a bride price paid to her family. From then on, Tarina joined the sideshow, exhibited as “The Deadly Nightshade! Half girl, half vampire bat!”. She was constantly on display, wearing realistic looking wings and revealing costume while sipping on her daily blood supply. However, unlike her former tribe she was accepted by the people of the circus, becoming close friends with the middle son of the circus aerialists. They often talked together on the trapeze as it was one of the few places that they could alone together.

It was just after Tarina's first kiss that she fell from the trapeze and her ubergene flared. Suddenly her fingers elongated, the furred skin between her fingers and underarms also elongated and expanded changing her arms into bat like wings. Her screams ranged into the ultrasonic and she quickly found out that she could hear her distance to the ground. With her new wings she glided into the safety net and stared up into the concerned eyes of her friend. When she was able to change her wings back to hands and arms she swore her friend to secrecy and hid her ability from the others, fearing what they might think. Other changes became appearant in the next few days when all of the men and boys started to notice her in an approving way and she found that she could lift small horses and the occasional baby elephant.

In Seattle disaster struck the circus, when in the middle of the last performance a fire ignited the reserve fuel and then the tents around it. The resulting inferno quickly rolled throughout the entire site despite the best efforts of the troupe and the local firefighters. By the time the infamous Seattle rain drenched the blackened and charred remains of the circus, Tarina was alone, her friend and the sideshow people who had cared for her were gone.

Fearing that she was somehow responsible for the death of her friends, she took to wing and fled. She found herself on the streets of Seattle alone, afraid, and hungry. She subsisted on what food she could find or steal and covered herself with stolen clothing and tried to ignore the growing blood hunger inside her. It occurred to her to feed upon the local stray animals but she was aware that many of them were diseased so she refrained from that. After her second day she found flyers advertising for donation to a blood bank with the all the information she needed to get there. The following night she broke in and she was feeding on the second of several bags of fresh blood when the lights went on and she was confronted by the local police. All she heard was, “Look, it's a Vampire!” as she gathered the remaining blood and charged through the gunfire, knocking both officers aside and escaping into the night.

Soon afterwards she found the Seattle underground and the Lair...

Personality

Tarina is generally a nice person and homebody, had she been born normal she would have ended up being someone's wife to be having a secure future with a husband and family around her. However her differences have caused her to be rejected and reviled by her family and her people who are a distant but still painful memory.

As a Romani (Gypsy) child she has been taught the importance of cleanliness, so while she doesn't think that she will get closer to God by washing her hands or bathing on a regular basis, she does so anyway and will try to be as clean as reasonably possible. This also extends to her environment, she will clean all the area within reach that she can without disturbing someone else.

Having heard that she was a freak, cursed, unclean, etc..., for most of her life in one form or another, Tarina believes that she is some kind of monster, most likely some strange type of vampire. But what she knows of vampires is less than most casual horror movie fans as she has never read any books or seen any movies on the subject, so she tends to react to the most well known vampiric wards and banes in ways that she understands. So while she will not cross running water if she's aware of it, nor walk onto Holy ground, stand in direct sunlight, or enter a house uninvited, she will fly over churches, take showers as often as she can, and look at herself in mirrors.

While she fears that she is some kind of evil monster because of her appearance and dietary requirements, she truly believes that she is and can be a good person if she tries hard enough. So, she tries.

Those times when she finds herself sorely tempted to do something remotely evil and she does, she is torn between feeling that she's only doing what she should and feeling extremely guilty about failing to do whats right. Tarina will use force to resolve a situation if no other option is clearly better and she will secretly enjoy doing so. She refuses to kill except when it is absolutely necessary to save lives or other extreme circumstances.

Since Tarina has had few people on her side for most of her life, those people who do accept her become as precious to her as blood and will receive all the warmth and affection that they may want. She tends to be physically demonstrative of her feelings, especially towards her friends because she was so often denied that level of affection in her early childhood. She tries not to hate anyone, as she fears what she might do to them should she lose control of herself. In the presence of people who actively dislike her, she tends to remain quiet and distant, only confronting them if provoked.

Quote

"Don't make me hurt you, it could really suck for both of us." or

(While displaying her fangs) "Come a little closer, I won't bite...much."

Powers

NightShade is basically a cross between a uber human and a slightly evolved vampire bat. She has tremendous strength and resilience due to the ubergene supercharging her physique and with a little concentration she can change her hands and arms into a pair of bat-like wings enabling her to fly or glide as bats do. She also possesses a bat's echolocation/sonar ability, enhanced hearing, and the fangs that allow her to fulfill her need to drink blood. Tarina has an additional ability that draws men to her like moths to a flame, a ultrasonic wave that stimulates the areas of the male human brain that control primal sexual attraction.

Appearance

Tarina wears mostly loose t-shirts or blouses and jeans or sweat pants that she either finds on the streets or in donation boxes. She also has a pair of high soft boots that she got from her circus boyfriend that are worn but usually clean. In fact, all of her clothes are usually clean. She has soft light tan fur over her skin which becomes waist length chestnut brown hair on her head. She has large pointed bat ears and fangs that are visible when she smiles and extend when she uses them. Her eyes are black which on first glance, give the impression that she has no irises.
