Rahel Parbhani was raised in a remote farming community near Sambalpur in eastern India. She was always a sickly child and the local pujari spent the first ten years of her life preparing her family for her inevitable death which never seemed to come. Rahel never quite managed to 'pass over', although her family often, secretly, wished she would and end the suffering. Her frequent illnesses proved expensive and took attention away from the farm work.

Rahel grew up as a liability, but when she was fourteen she was given a second chance at life. During the day light hours she was still sickly and feeble, but after the sun went down Rahel's body was infused with power.

Her family had suffered so much because of her sickness and Rahel wanted to repay them. She toiled hard during the nights, doing more work than fifteen men. The farm prospered but her nightly labours were soon discovered. Although she thought she would be ostracised, Rahel was actually embraced by the pujari, her family and the community. She continued to help on the farm at night.

When she was twenty-one, Rahel felt that she needed to move away from Sambalpur. None of the local families would allow one of their sons to marry her, because even though she was revered in the village, she was still considered sickly. Rather than burden her family again, Rahel moved to Kolkata and began to work to alleviate the city of its crime.

She took on the name, Luna, and developed a reputation as a 'Night Crusader'. The Assembly approached her and offered her membership, even though her powers were only really useful during the night.


Rahel is a simple woman who believes in living life without excess. She misses the life on her farm and feels a little out of her depth in the cities. She cares about the people around her, especially her friends in Assembly, and the poor. She often works on the streets at night, helping the poor find food and shelter, as well as patrolling for crime.

Luna gains incredible strength and durability when the sun vanishes. She is also able to fly and climb walls. Natural sunlight robs her of her vitality, and to an extent, so does heat and general light. She is able to see in darkness and prefers to operate alone taking full advantage of the shadows. She complements her natural powers with an assortment of throwing stars and an armoured costume.


Rahel is a thin and gaunt woman during the daylight hours. She appears to be in her fifties, but is actually only half that. When the sunlight disappears, her body undergoes an incredible transformation. As Luna she is a full-bodied woman with a vibrant smile and healthy looking skin. She wears a white costume with yellow belt and boots, a white domino mask, and a silver-white cape which looks like stylised wings.
