Background

Life can turn on a dime. For Tatiana it happened late at night as she and her parents were fleeing from the Georgian military. Her parents were members of a group of rebels who helped declare South Ossetia independent from Georgia. The truck swerved around a corner deep in when a flash of red crossed in front. Her father veered to miss what he thought might be a deer and lost control. The truck flipped on it top before slamming into a tree. Metal screeched and glass shattered. Tatiana was thrown free of the vehicle. Her parents weren't so lucky. When Tatiana woke it was to the sight of the truck in flames. She tried to rush into the flames but the heat was too strong. In despair, Tatiana turned to the woods and rushed off, knowing that her parents hadn't had a chance. She was only eight years old at the time.

The woods were dark and frightening. An owl hooted up in a tree and Tatiana had to slap her hand across her mouth to stifle a scream. Who knew if the soldiers were that far away? Her father had told her that the bad people were coming for them and that they had to get away. To make things worse she was completely lost. In a panic Tatiana aimlessly wandered in the woods. It was only when she felt that she should just lie down and die that she thought she saw a light.

Legs hurting from the wreck and all the walking she had done she came closer. The light came from the window of a peasant's hut surrounded by a picket fence. Tatiana called out to the house saying that she was lost and was hurt and could she come inside. No one steered within, but of its own volition the gate in the picket fence swung open. Tatiana thought she might be in shock, not believing what had happened. Hesitantly, she came to the door of the hut and knocked.

In an instant the door was flung open and standing in the doorway was the ugliest woman Tatiana had ever seen before. Greasy gray locks hung down to the woman's shoulders and when she smiled down at Tatiana she saw iron teeth. Tatiana almost fainted at the sight of the woman.

“So who comes knocking at Baba Yaga's door.” the hag said towering over the girl.

“Um...My name is Tatiana”

“Oh do come in my dear and have a seat by the fire.”

Hesitantly Tatiana came inside the odd hut and as soon as she had crossed the threshold the door slammed shut tight. She had barely sat down near the fire when the whole hut started shaking and Tatiana was thrown to the floor as the hut stood up on its chicken legs. Before she knew what was happening the hut started lurching through the woods. Tatiana wasn't to leave that hut for another ten years.

During the intervening years Tatiana was virtual slave. Baba Yaga treated her fairly but never let her leave the hut. Tatiana was made to keep the hut spotless and to prepare the witches food. In exchange Baba Yaga taught her about magic. The years went by and Tatiana proved to be quite adapt at the magic.

One day in the deepest winter Baba Yaga gave Tatiana the Mark of Power. By this time Tatiana had been introduced to the three servants of Baba Yaga. The first was a man dressed entirely in white, who was named Bright Day. The next was a man dress entirely in red called Radiant Sun, and finally the man dressed entirely in black named Dark Night.

“Attend me,” Baba Yaga commanded.

Silently, the trio came forward holding their right hand out to the witch. Baba Yaga reached out with a steel tipped quill and jabbed the quill into the palm of Bright Day's palm. White blood welled up in the wound and using the blood she stared to drew the Mark of Power upon Tatiana's face. She knew better than to scream but the quill cut into her face and Bright Day's blood burned like acid. The process was repeated again with the red and then the black blood from Radiant Sun's and Dark Night. In the end the pain was too much and Tatiana fainted.

It wasn't until the following evening that she regained consciousness. Shuttering Tatiana got up and set about fixing dinner for Baba Yaga who sat near the fire drinking from a mug of beer. She had barely got started when the door to the hut slammed open. Tatiana was so surprised. That door only opened for Baba Yaga and no one else. Years ago she had tried to escape through that door but it always resisted her attempts to open.

Striding in was the most beautiful woman Tatiana had ever seen. She and Baba Yaga were complete opposites; ultimate ugliness and breathe taking beauty. This woman dressed kind of slutty with a leather bustier with two silver skulls that kept her breasts up, a similar skimpy thong, and boots that came up to her knees. Flowing locks the color of barely cascaded down her to her shoulders. To top it all of she worn a black cloak with a red lining. She took one look at Tatiana and saw the Mark of Power. If looks could kill Tatiana would be dead in that instant.

“By Holender's Hellfire Mother, who is this tramp?” she demanded pointing a well manicured finger directly at Tatiana's face.

“Now, now Natasha. There is no need for all this animosity,” Baba Yaga said trying to placate.

Natasha was having none of it. As for Tatiana she didn't much care about this strumpets attitude. She was just about to speak up, but Natasha beat her to the punch.

With words that dripped honey and power she said. “This is no place for you to be. This conversation is to be between Mother and I. Leave now and never return.”

The Mark of Power flashed a little as Natasha's command swept over Tatiana. Try as she might she couldn't resist the command. Turning on heel she marched stiffly to the door swung it open and stepped out into the world once again. However, her exit from the hut wasn't without pain because the hut had been standing at the time on its enormous chicken legs. The fall wasn't far but it was enough to hurt.

Painfully she stood up and watched as Baba Yaga's hut receded into the distance. Once again like ten years ago, Tatiana's life had turned on a dime. Once again she was lost in a woods. It took her about three days to find her way back to civilization. She was no longer in South Ossetia but had found herself in Switzerland near the town of Chur. Free of Baba Yaga she finally felt the weight of the loss of her parents and the loss of her childhood to the witch come down hard on her emotionally. Tatiana took to drinking and drinking heavily.

Years passed in an alcoholic blur as Tatiana made her way back to South Ossetia. The conflict between South Ossetia and Georgia was over, but large swaths of the countryside were in ruins. People were lost and oddly enough some people turned to Tatiana for help in finding them. It was their stories of loss that finally helped Tatiana to break her addiction to alcohol. People started calling her Zvezda or 'Star' in Russian. The new name came as a comfort to Tatiana and gave her strength.

Life once again took a change for Tatiana. At a meeting for alcoholics she met Grigol Dzhugashvili. Grigol was several years older than Tatiana but the two hit it off well. He too was a recovering alcholic. He recently had been a police detective in Rustavi but was cashiered when his drinking got out of control. So he had traveled north to South Ossetia and set himself up as a private detective. The two started dating and Grigol consulted 'Zvezda' on a number of his cases. He went further to start training Tatiana to become a detective. The pair even considered becoming partners, but their relationship came to a tragic end. Grigol was investigating the Russian Organizatsiya activities in the port city of Poti. Tatiana never did discover exactly what had happened to Grigol, but one night he was found floating face down in the port. Grigol's death almost caused Tatiana to fall off the wagon, but after mourning him for a year, Tatiana returned to his office and became one of the most prominent occult detectives in Europe. Her star has been shining ever since.

Personality

Tatiana has demons in her closet. The loss of her parents, and being a virtual prisoner to Baba Yaga drove her to drink. The desire to drink has never left her. It's only by shear willpower and her curious nature has kept her alive this long. Not to mention that fact that she still wants to get payback Baba Natasha for her treatment in the hut. Tatiana has taught herself to go to meets when the bottle calls her. So far since she met Grigol she has been able to resist the temptation. Some might say if it wasn't for her career as a private/occult detective she would have succumbed years ago.

During the bad old days when Tatiana was a drunk, people all over South Ossetia came to her asking for assistance in locating lost relatives during the Five-Day War. At first she wasn't very good at finding anybody, but that didn't stop them from asking. And if the person she was looking for was taken by some cult or had a mystical bent to the story Tatiana was even more interested. She never could turn anyone away. Her willingness to listen to anyone story has gotten her in over her head a number of times.

In addition to Tatiana's willingness to listen to any story, no matter how far fetched is backed up by an almost insatiable curiosity. Tatiana has traveled all over Europe, and occasionally to the States and to Asia searching and investigating. At times her curiosity is almost like a defense mechanism that helps her cope with her loss. If she took time to stop and take measure of the world around her she might fall back into bad habits. It was also her curiosity that helped survive under the tutelage of Baba Yaga.

Quote

"By Bright Day, Radiant Sun, and Dark Night I will not allow it."

Powers

While under the tutalage of a strict Baba Yaga, Tatiana learned a lot about magic. While not in the league of Baba Yaga, or Baba Natasha, Tatiana is no slouch either. To strengthen her Baba Yaga branded her with the Mark of Power. This mark, to Tatiana, could be either considered a blessing or a curse. On the positive side the Mark of Power provides some protection against hostile magic and protects her mind to a degree against mental intrusion, but on the other hand the Mark of Power is like a beacon to any mystical being or any magician worth his salt. Another gift of Baba Yaga was the Coat of Radiant Sun. What exactly the coat is really made of is unknown. What is known about the coat is that it has shown to be able to withstand small arms fire without showing any damage. As such the coat provides Tatiana further protection.

In addition to the magic in the Mark of Power, Tatiana has learned to use the magic of the three servants of Baba Yaga. Using Bright Day magic she came cause a destructive beam of light to leap from her hands, become invisible, and create a blinding flash of light that is almost unbearable. Tatiana has expanded upon the magic that Baba Yaga taught her and can use the Bright Day to create believable images of herself that can confuse her opponents. Using the Radiant Sun magic Tatiana can drain a person of their vitality be causing them to lose a lot of their moisture. Another spell in her arsenal lets her call a lethal bolt of fire from the heavens that can immolate her foes. Tatiana can further sheathe herself in flames that protect her from most attacks. Lastly, she can use the Radiant Sun magic to create a large ball of flames that she hurtles at her foes. Her last form of magic is the magic of Dark Night. Using the Dark Night magic she can cause chains of darkness to wrap themselves around her foes that blocks off their vision. Naturally, Tatiana can bring forth darkness that only she can see through. The last two magic of the Dark Night that Tatiana has master require her to have shadows or darkness not of her own creating. One is that she can prey on a victims fear of the darkness sending her them screaming off into the night. The other is a way to move through the shadows without physically traveling the distance.

The only other magic that Tatiana knows how to use is the ability to sense magic. Tatiana is quite adapt in the use of her magical sense. She can tell what kind of magic is used all around her. Furthermore, Tatiana can even track the magic back to the source. However, since that sense is tied in with her vision, if for any reason she was blinded she would loose the use of the magic until her vision recovered.

Appearance

Tatiana is woman of above average height with a somewhat lithe frame. She has dark red hair which seems to have a mind of its own. Tatiana tries her best to keep it under control, at the very least she keeps part of it a ponytail tied with a green ribbon that matches the color of her eyes. As Zvezda she doesn't wear a costume as such. She normally dresses in a blue top along with matching black tights. Over her clothing she wears the Radiant Sun coat, which was a coat made for her Baba Yaga from the cloak of her servant Radiant Sun. The coat looks like it was made of red leather but in fact it is so much more. The most interest feature of Tatiana is the Mark of Power, which to those without the ability to sense magic, is an intricate star that is inked in red. However, to those mystics and those sensitive to magic the Mark of Power appears to be so much more.
