When David Mackenzie woke up in a cheap hotel outside of Birmingham in 2005 he felt a little hung over but otherwise fine. It wasn't until he looked in the mirror that he realised he had grown a foot and put on nearly 1800lbs of heavy rock-like skin. He panicked and tried to escape but he couldn't fit back into the truck he was driving and so he had to flee on foot.

The police caught up with him quickly but couldn't restrain him for over five hours. When Mackenzie did finally sit down he began to cry and the police called in help from Majestic. The heroes arrived and Mackenzie was sent to a psychiatrist who specialised in helping people adapt to their new uberhuman physiologies.

That was the last Majestic heard from Mackenzie and they assumed he had coped well enough, but Mackenzie hadn't coped at all. He had lost his job. No one would hire a stone giant to drive trucks, and the only work he could get was being a bouncer at exotic clubs in Glasgow. He was unhappy and depressed, often contemplating suicide but not quite sure how to go about it. Whenever he thought too long about planning his death his body would react by generating even more dense stone-like flesh.

And then he met a group of mercenaries who were obviously criminals but who also had an attractive idea. Celtic Fist needed Mackenzie's strength and he felt flattered and a little excited about using his curse for something other than guarding strip joints. He joined the group of mercenaries and took on the name Cairn, although he hasn't been fully tested in battle yet.

Cairn is a timid man really, although he looks like a giant made from stone. He tries to be careful with his strength but has been known to smash chairs and even doorframes when he's not concentrating properly. He is a follower but does so to the letter of the command, fearing that he will mess things up if he does anything unusual. He realises that he is very new to the mercenary world, but has already developed a liking for it. He enjoys being considered part of the team and especially likes the fact that he isn't the only strange person in his immediate vicinity. Being easily recognisable, Cairn tries not to go out into public during daylight hours and generally finds himself accidentally holding up convenience stores at night when he needs something, only because the people behind the desks always over-react.
"Nothing can hurt me ever again!"

Cairn's body has transformed into a rock-like substance which still allows his body to function normally, but which provides him with an almost indestructible shell. When he concentrates he can even develop a further shell of protective stone making it even more difficult to harm him. In addition to this durability and superhuman strength, Cairn is also able to mentally manipulate stone and rock so that he can cleave out tunnels. He has practiced this ability to an extent that he can now move faster underground than he can above it.

Although his ears have disappeared Cairn has developed a sonar ability which enables him to perceive the world around him using sonic waves, and this has been very useful underground.

Cairn is huge and seems to be made entirely of a dark red rock. His arms and legs are as thick as tree stumps and his face appears to only had slightly glowing eyes and mouth. In costume he wears a simple loin cloth connected to a thick metal belt which has the letter C emblazoned in the middle.  He finds it difficult to find clothing to wear outside of his loincloth, but since becoming a mercenary he has paid for specially-made track suits.
