Background

Squadron Leader Raymond “Ray-Man” Derringer once was a highly decorated fighter pilot in AIRCOM (Canadian Forces Air Command). He was considered to be one of the top fighter pilots in Canada. His last assignment with AIRCOM was as a test pilot. It was at a hidden airbase in the Northern Territories that Ray first got to see the XCF-13 code named: Darkwing. The jet fighter was top secret and was said to be even stealthier than any of the stealth fighters that the Americans had ever made, hence the secrecy around the jet fighter.

What made the jet fighter so stealthy was a revolutionary cloaking device that was based upon captured technology from an alien scout ship. While the cloaking device wasn’t perfected, it had shown marked improvements in the laboratories. Then next step was the XCF-13. Enter Squadron Commander Derringer.

Squadron Commander didn’t know anything about the aliens and only a little about the cloaking device. For him it was chance to fly a new jet fighter. Ray lived to fly. He was blithely unaware of the other people who had also taken an interest in the Darkwing.

Queen Bee wearing a stolen uniform gaped at the huge jet fighter across the hanger from where she stood. Normally such a thing wasn’t something the International House of Crime would be interesting in, but the buyer was quite insistent and the price offered for the cloaking device was hefty enough for her and a few of her compatriots. Unfortunately she didn’t know much about jet fighters and thought it too risky to take it here.

She stood holding a clipboard occasionally glancing toward the jet fighter when its pilot came walking by heading toward the jet. For a moment Queen Bee debated taking control of his mind, but decided against it. If she took control, he might not be able to control the jet. Losing the Darkwing wasn’t an option in her opinion. The plans she had made with Arctos and Vinchuca would work. They three thieves had accounted for almost any contingency, except for what happened next.

Ray was inspecting the Darkwing for the last rounds of flight testing when sirens started blaring. Crewmen were scrambling all over the place. A voice yelled over the public address system.

“Alert! Alert! The base is under attack. A band of unknowns has breached the outer perimeter . . .” the sound of gunfire. “Robots . . . They’re robots for Christ’s sake . . . Now hear this . . . Get that fighter off the ground. We can’t allow it to be captured by the robots.”

Ray swung into action. Putting on his flight helmet, he ran up the gantry leading to the cockpit of the Darkwing. Soon he was strapped in and was revving up the engine. In the background Queen Bee cursed silently. Someone else was interested in the cloaking device.

The Darkwing fighter flew out into the crisp night. Volley after of volley of fission energy ripped through the night. Iron Maiden and her robot army were in hot pursuit of the Darkwing. She hoped that Derringer wouldn’t engage the cloaking device before her robots captured the Darkwing.

Iron Maidens’ robots had almost latched on a tail fin when a burst of white light shot up from the tundra bellow knocking several of the robots back. Arctos had entered the fray. He wasn’t going to allow Iron Maiden to steal what he was here to steal. Iron Maiden had just dispatched a squad of robots to deal with the Swede when Ray activated the cloaking device. The sky went blacker than black. With no reference points, all of the robots crashed into the tundra far below. Arctos had to run for cover because it was raining robots.

However, Ray didn’t get away scot-free. A lucky shot from one of the robots destroyed the tail fin. The Darkwing went totally out of control. No matter how good a pilot Ray was there was nothing he could do to bring it back under control. He punched the ejection button but nothing happened. The Earth came closer and closer and then an incredible explosion rocked the Northern Territories. Miles away Iron Maiden cursed her luck as did Queen Bee and Arctos. The cloaking device was lost to them both. Their employers wouldn’t be too happy.

Ray crawled away from the wreckage of the Darkwing. He knew he was lucky to be alive. A fire raged for miles around as the fuel burnt. However, the most disturbing part was the energy that the cloaking device was generating. The energy almost felt alive. Ray clumsily got to his feet when a pulse of the darkest energy struck him like lightning. He was thrown back a few yards and was knocked unconscious.

The sun was up the next day when Ray awoke. He hurt all over but was able to eventually get to his feet. The Darkwing was a smoking ruin and the fire had gone out. Searching through the wreckage, he came across a shiny piece of metal and got a good look at his face. The sight of his face unhinged Ray a little bit. His right eye was gone, replaced by a pulsing black light. Ray let the world know his rage by screaming to the sky. A black light burst forth from where his eye once was. On a continent far away from Canada a group of men sat around a table sat watching Ray through the eyes of a spy satellite. As a group they all smiled. Things were going as planned.

Personality

The loss of his eye has seriously bent Ray’s mind. Ray not thinks that it was a conspiracy against him that caused his plane to crash. These people gave him a black-eye so now he’s going to give them a black-eye. Of course he has no idea who was involved, so he suspects everybody. He has become a super-villain because there would be no way to achieve his goals on the right side of the law. Besides who knows the so called super-heroes might have been involved.

Black-Eye, as Ray now calls himself, is very bitter about what happened to him. Given time he’ll brood on the subject. Most other super-villains steer clear of the brooding Black-Eye.

Quote

“....And through the Darkness, I come.”

Powers

Through unknown means Black-Eye is able to tap into an extra-dimensional space of total darkness. Black-Eye can use this force in a number of different ways. He can create a field of total darkness around him or around foes that is impenetrable. Only Black-Eye can see in his darkness. Black-Eye is able to enter the darkness and move into the other dimension and instantaneously transport himself to a point distant from where he was originally standing.

By solidifying the darkness Black-Eye can entrap his foes. Offensively Black-Eye can project bolts of darkness from his hands, but his more powerful “Blackbolt II” comes directly from his ruined eye.

Appearance

Black-Eye wears a skintight black body suit along with white boots and gloves as a costume. A large eye is emblazoned across the upper part of the chest of the body suit. Black-Eye’s right eye was destroyed in the crash. Now that same eye glows with a black light. Ray wears an eye patch over the eye to hide his powers when not in costume. Normally Black-Eye uses his darkness to hide his identity. Otherwise Ray is a muscular man with shoulder length blond hair. His only remaining eye is brown. When hiding his identity Ray usually poses as a pilot. He’ll wear dark clothing favoring hats and trench coats.
