Colleen Morrell, a lab technician at a local biological research facility run by Kilcaren Enterprises, was exposed to an experimental bio-weapon while six months pregnant. A rogue IRA agent had infiltrated the facility in order to steal the research. Unfortunately for Colleen, her unborn child and the IRA operative, he was discovered. Armed security guards chased the man into the lab where Colleen was working. A flurry of gunshots, broken vials and shattered containment screens were the precursors to the cycle of death and birth that would follow.

This toxin, a viral agent that attacked at the genetic level, was designed as a weapon and deterrent against a possible uprising from the emerging meta-human population. This toxin specifically attacked the meta-gene responsible for most of their powers, causing rapid cellular decay. Unknown to Colleen and her employers, Colleen possessed this "meta-gene".

Taking full responsibility for the "accident", Kilcaren Enterprises spared no expense for the medical treatment for Colleen. After all, they were privileged to see their product in action and chart its progress, something that they had not hoped to accomplish until further along in its testing phase. Further consideration was given to the fact that the incident at the labs and the containment procedures eradicated all samples of the weapon and ruined most of the research notes. Colleen was now the only source available if the toxin proved to be viable.

As the pregnancy progressed, Colleen got weaker, her body degenerating fast. The doctors began to become concerned for the baby, for Colleen's body was breaking down at the cellular level, but remarkably her meta-gene was actively working to protect the unborn child. As with most meta-humans, the environment in which their abilities became active defined their abilities. Colleen was no exception. She was fighting for her life and her daughter's life against a particularly virulent bio-agent. Her Meta-gene responded by strengthening Colleen's womb and immune system, replicating itself in the developing fetus and began its ultimately failed attempt at neutralizing the viral agent. As her term neared, Colleen gave up on fighting for herself and concentrated all of her energy on keeping her daughter alive. Her meta-gene responded by actively destroying any viral agent in the blood as it filtered into the womb. As each week passed another of Colleen's organ's deteriorated as the meta-gene focused more and more on Kayla's fortress.

Three weeks before her due date, Colleen finally gave out. The doctors performed an emergency C-section delivery, and Kayla was born a seemingly normal healthy baby. Kilcaren's crude tests could find no evidence of a meta-gene or their bio-toxin in the newborn, and Colleen's failing system had finally eradicated every remnant of the bio-toxin in her body as it shut down, denying Kilcaren even a sample of the live virus.

Denied their prize and dearly wishing to avoid a wrongful death suit, Kilcaren paid handsomely, calling it death benefits. With the specter of his wife's final struggle driving him, and Kilcaren Enterprises blood money supporting him, Duncan Morrell took his new daughter and moved to Dublin. Raising a baby was difficult for the former commercial fisherman but somehow Duncan soldiered on.

Kayla was an exceptional child. From birth, she seemed preternaturally aware of her surroundings. Always exceptionally responsive to music, Kayla could often be found listening to the radio or her father's singing with an intensity bordering on rapture. By the age of three, the precocious young lady was keeping tune with the songs she heard, often humming or singing the notes when she didn't understand or know the words. At age 5, it was determined that she was a vocal prodigy, with perfect pitch and the ability to reproduce any vocal score after only hearing it once.

However, this discovery was offset by an odd change in the happy toddler's personality. Kayla began to refuse to go to bed at night, often waking her Dad, screaming in the darkness, claiming that it hurt. Her night-lights became brighter and brighter until finally Kayla could only sleep with the overhead lights on and the room as bright as the midday sun. Travelling at night became almost impossible.

As worrisome as the changes in Kayla's behavior were, the odd occurrences around the house truly had Duncan concerned. Odd sounds could be heard in the night, random bits of music, snippets of conversation, animal noises, etc.... Duncan began to think their house was haunted. No one suspected the beautiful toddler was actually the cause of the disturbances.

As Kayla grew older, her dependence on light, artificial or natural grew more intense. Her eyesight started fading, yet her vocal skills were increasing. Already a talented and acclaimed vocalist, Kayla began performing in the school choir, the church choir; she would even join the singers on the streets, just to lose herself in song. It was the escape the troubled young woman desperately needed from her tribulations.

These sessions, though ultimately fulfilling for the young performer, were often overshadowed by strange happenings. A lighting bar on the stage would short out, plunging the stage into darkness causing Kayla to go into a panic attack. Microphones would squeal painfully with feed back, interrupting an enchanting aria. Portions of the audience would suffer "hallucinations," swearing that the performer was often turning black before their eyes.

These mishaps had an unusual affect on the young singer's notoriety; the odder the occurrence, the more people flocked to her performances, hoping to witness an occurrence. Though her singing career began to take off, Kayla's personal life was falling apart. Her eyesight had faded to nothing. While greater and greater acclaim was laid upon Kayla and her angelic voice, her peers shunned her, as odd and troublesome, and taunted her with names of 'freak' and banshee.

When Kayla turned 16, an American recording label, Capitol Records, contacted Duncan. Young Kayla's golden voice had caught one of their talent scouts attention and they wanted to fly Kayla to the States and record a single to see how well she'd be received.

The young singer fought hard to curb her excitement as the plane took off from Dublin International Airport. She'd grown up immersed in all things music, her native lays, lullabies and ballads as well as popular music from the UK and the States. The fact that someone wanted her to join the ranks of her favorite bands and artists filled the normally quiet and shy teenager with awe and excitement.

Kayla's first arrival at Kennedy International Airport was almost anticlimactic for the awestruck teen. The busy airport was crowded, noisy and overpowering. The wait through customs was almost unbearable for the young woman, who was excited to experience a whole new world from what she'd grown up in.

After Duncan and his daughter were finally cleared through customs, a round smiling gentleman who vaguely resembled America's version of Saint Nicholas met the tired duo. The warmth and timbre of his voice delighted the tired teen, instantly putting her at ease. Introducing himself as Nolan Murphy, the studio representative hustled the weary travelers to baggage claim. After arranging to have the luggage sent to the hotel, Nolan led Duncan and Kayla to the hotel for some much needed rest.

Nolan led the father and daughter team through a couple of days of playing tourist to allow them to recover from the 18-hour flight. These days, filled with sounds, odors and tastes completely new to young singer, would shine in the Kayla's mind like a dazzling fireworks display.

Later that week, Kayla's shy smile, angelic voice and tragic history bedazzled the record Labels executives with an impromptu rendition of an ancient Irish ballad. Her voice filled the room, polished and perfect without the mechanical enhancements some artists required to reach the same level. The executives were stunned. A sample recording session was planned to see if the teenager's voice recorded as beautifully as it sounded accapella.

The next several weeks blurred past as Kayla was ushered into and out of recording session after session. Her voice recorded as well as expected. The scramble now was finding a song to display the young singer's vocal talents. The plan was to record a single and based on focus group responses, do a limited release to see how the public received the new artist.

The initial response was overwhelmingly positive. The single was demanding unprecedented airplay across the nation. Sensing that they had a hit and future diva on their hands, Capitol Records signed the young woman to a preliminary contract, a one-year, one album deal with option to renew and extend based on album sales. Due to the warmth of their burgeoning relationship, Nolan Murphy was assigned as her permanent contact within the label, acting as her agent.

With high hopes in their hearts and dollar signs dancing in their heads, Capitol Records worked with the state department extending the visitors visas for Duncan and Kayla into full work visas. Plans were made to move the father daughter to the City of Angels, where the label's headquarters were, to start production of Kayla's debut album. However tragedy cut short the golden dream.

Duncan left a publicity party late one night heading back to the hotel about an hour away, with Kayla in the back seat sleeping, a couple of battery powered flood lamps keeping the child comfortable. Nolan was to follow shortly after in a second car.

Mr. Murphy had been delayed and did not reach the hotel until several hours later. Inquiring after his charges, Nolan was informed neither had returned to the hotel. Instantly worried, Murphy headed out into the cold New York night. Retracing the route that he had just come didn't net anything. Murphy's heater stopped working shortly on his second return trip and he had to roll down the window to clear the condensation build up on the front windshield. This simple act probably saved Kayla's life.

As Murphy drove slowly along the curvy wooded road, an odd noise drew his attention. It was a loud humming, sounding vaguely like an extraordinarily large electrical transformer. Stopping his car to investigate the sound, Nolan saw tire tracks in the soft shoulder, and broken underbrush leading down the embankment. Nolan was able to orient on the loud humming as he stepped out of his car. It was coming from down the hill.

Scrambling down the hill, the frightened agent saw the crumpled remains of the Morrell's rental car. The car was resting against a tree, the front end folded and crushed well into the front seating compartment. The humming and crackling he had heard from the road, was louder and coming from the vehicle. Looking around, Nolan could not see any power lines, so he approached the car, calling both Duncan's and Kayla's name, praying feverishly for survivors.

While Duncan was crushed, Kayla had miraculously survived the accident with nothing but some bruising. Murphy was shocked; a crackling energy field surrounded the beautiful redhead. The humming that had drawn him to the car was coming from the energy field that cocoons his young star. It seemed to have protected the pretty teen from serious harm, though the doors were jammed shut, and Kayla was wedged tightly between the crumpled roof and the seat, the energy field only inches from her body.

Kayla was hysterical with fear and shock, almost catatonic. Unable to get the young Irish woman out of the car, Nolan fumbled with his cell phone calling for emergency assistance. While he waited, Nolan spoke as soothingly to the trapped young lady as he could, trying desperately to calm her down. Realizing that part of her reactions was the fact that the young lady had been sitting in the dark for who knows how long, Nolan scrambled up to his car hoping against hope that he had some sort of flash light.

Popping the lid, Nolan scrounged through the trunk, finally finding an old battery powered camping lantern. A quick flick of the power switch assured the worried man that there was still some juice in the battery. How long it would last was a whole other issue. Scrambling quickly back down the embankment, Nolan arranged the lantern so that the lamp spread through the window bathing the frightened young lady in it's cold harsh light. As the beam fell on the enveloped teen, the hum of the energy field got louder. Murphy continued to speak softly reassuring Kayla that she wasn't alone. Shortly before the rescue vehicles arrived, Kayla gave a soft gasp and the energy field surrounding her disappeared.

As the light from the lamp bathed Kayla, Nolan could swear that she seemed to be fading from his sight, the bright auburn hair and fair skin turning to blackness, a void amongst the circle of the light cast by his lamp. Shaking his head in disbelief, Nolan realized that his new charge was probably gifted in more ways than her vocal talents. The rescue vehicles pulled up just as the black corona enveloping her faded. Thankful that her abilities would remain hidden for the moment, Nolan wedged the lamp tight in the door and scrambled up the embankment to flag down the rescue team.

The investigation of the accident was surprisingly inconclusive, especially with Kayla, the only witness, stubbornly refusing to discuss the accident. Written off as a sad tragedy, the investigation was closed. The label put up the grieving young woman at her agent's insistence. Several heated closed -door meetings between Murphy and the execs saw the Label footing the bill in an attempt to help the young woman recover. Unbeknownst to Kayla, many tests were also run, determining positively that Murphy's hunch was right and the talented singer possessed an active meta-gene.

The marketing department fairly drooled to have a talented 'Meta' in the Label's stable of artists. Again, fate stepped in and dropped a roadblock. The Republic of Ireland, through its embassy, objected strenuously. After all, Kayla was still a minor, and a handicapped one at that. Kayla became a ward of the state, and was quickly flown back to Dublin.

The trip back was significantly less pleasant for Kayla. Shortly after take off, Kayla began to become agitated. Already at a disadvantage because of her need to be in light, the frightened young woman started showing signs a growing sense of claustrophobia. As the flight lengthened, Kayla finally had to be sedated to keep her from harming herself.

Kayla presented a unique case to Dublin's Child protective services. While legally a minor, her inheritance from her father and burgeoning music career showed she had resources enough to support herself. The main issue was her blindness. Kayla had lived a sheltered life and the general opinion was that she was not prepared to live as an adult regardless of her financial status. With no living relatives, the state appointed a guardian, a matronly woman who often fostered older children.

While Kayla was now considered moderately wealthy, the State mandated the money put into a fund, until she turned eighteen. Her Guardian, Margie O'Halaran, took in the quiet and withdrawn teen, endeavoring to bring Kayla out of her depression and help her prepare for life on her own.

The next two years were a struggle for Kayla. While her guardian was pleasant and understanding, the loss of her father had deeply affected the girl. The trauma of the accident twisted inside Kayla's mind until she could not bear tight or cramped spaces anymore. State sponsored psychologists were unable to resolve the girl's ever increasing sense of guilt over the accident, which manifested in night terrors.

The only bright spot were the calls and from Nolan. His warm and gentle voice reminded Kayla of her first few days in the States and the joy that she had experienced during the audition and recording sessions. Nolan's warmth and caring attitude actually led the withdrawn teen back to her music.

For over a year, Kayla fought her natural instincts and shunned all forms of music, saying the joy had gone with her father's passing. Murphy's gentle support, friendship and his own passion for music showed Kayla that by creating something beautiful she could heal from the destruction.

Due to several disagreements with his employers, Nolan had decided to strike out on his own. His attachment to the shy and talented young woman brought him across the Atlantic Ocean. While he had no children of his own, Kayla had quickly captured his heart and filled the void he had not realized was there.

Nolan's guidance and support soon led Kayla back into the recording studio.

Instead of pop songs designed and chosen by marketing guru's, Kayla's debut album would be a heartfelt ode to her parents, containing re-workings of her parent's favorite songs, ancient ballads, and original songs that spoke of love and loss. Very much a cathartic piece of art, Kayla's album titled simply 'Memories' was ready for release shortly after Kayla's eighteenth birthday. Armed with a finished piece and full access to her inheritance, which amounted to almost half a million dollars US, Kayla and Nolan headed back to the US.

After renewing the contract with the now booming Capitol Records, 'Memories' was released to overwhelming success. Instead of interest waning during the two year drought, Kayla's tragic history, fiery good looks and golden voice had created a cult following. The critics loved the smooth vocals, dynamic moods, clever arrangements and surprisingly mature theme of the overall album. In particular, Kayla's rendition of "After the Lovin'", one of her father's all time favorite love songs, garnered the vibrant eighteen year old her first Grammy nomination and award for "Best New Female Artist" setting the stage for one of the most spectacular music careers in history.

Nolan parlayed the success of Kayla's first album into a virtual dynasty for the beautiful vocalist. During her first nationwide tour in 1995, the events in Mobile, AL would again change the rising young star's future. Senator Bill Hawkins was assassinated during a fund raising speech. A fundraiser at which Kayla was present. Nolan had bought her tickets as a way to increase visibility of his client. It didn't hurt that the Senator's daughter was a fan.

The brush with death so rattled the new star, that the performance the next evening was canceled; the first such cancellation of her career, and coincidentally her last. During the trip to her next city, Nolan and Kayla had a long talk; a talk about skills, talents, and security. Nolan gently revealed to the shocked singer what he had witnessed that fateful night two years ago. He was convinced that Kayla had the ability to protect herself, and finally talked the frightened young woman into exploring her abilities.

During the next several years, amidst two more album releases, the end of her first tour and start of her second, the two worked together discovering the limits of her abilities. The first ability discovered is probably the one by which she is most known. Kayla's eidetic memory, perfect pitch and mimicry skills, coupled with the ability to generate and manipulate a sonic field turned the beautiful Irish performer into a living synthesizer and recorder. Her subconcious had been manipulating this ability for years, strengthening her vocal performances as well as causing the auditory phenomena that had plagued her since childhood.

Though success seemed to follow Kayla through her music career, she never forgave herself for surviving the wreck that killed her father. As she grew more focused and self-assured, in herself and in her powers, Kayla began to feel she needed to do something to prove she was worthy to be her parent's legacy to the world. After applying for and receiving permission to be considered a citizen of both the US and Republic of Ireland, Kayla settled down, as much as a media superstar can possibly settle down, and concentrated on refining her abilities and bringing as much joy to the world as she could with her music.

When the letter came from the City of Denver offering a position on the Denver Defenders, Nolan knew that Kayla's true calling was upon her. It was fitting that things had come full circle. The events that happened 8 years ago would culminate in the birth of a new hero, named after the one of the first manifestations of her power, Eclipse.


Kayla is a mix of personalities and reactions; her demeanor in private life is different from her superhero personae, which is different from her stage presence. Kayla is quiet and reserved when not performing or in "super" mode.

Her fear of the dark and enclosed spaces lead her to spending a lot of time outdoors during the day and at night she stays in well lit areas, her den is lit with fluorescent lights as is her bedroom.

Kayla’s "blindness" makes her shy, and she is uncomfortable with the notoriety she has garnered as a pop singer. Kayla is most relaxed and at home when she is on stage. Her refuge from the inconvenience and problems caused by her powers is music, and when she is performing, her heart/mind/body and soul are engulfed by the music. The song becomes her personality, if it is a flirty song, she is flirty, and if it is a sad song, she is sad. The music is all; it allows her to forget that darkness is just around the corner, and her need for light. Her audiences are caught up in this emotional barrage, and carried along for the ride just as Kayla is.

As Eclipse, she is a bit more brash and quick to react, usually at the wrong time. She is trying to balance her stage personae and real personality and deal with the abilities and curses that her powers have provided and has not quite found the proper ratio. Not quite a quipster, she has been known to fire off a wisecrack or two before unleashing a devastating sonic attack and then flipping her hair and sniffing at the enemy she has laid waste to.

As a result of exposure to the bio-toxin in the womb, Kayla’s meta-gene became slowly active through out her infancy, building on her talent of perfect pitch and mimicry, set Kayla up as a biological sonic capacitor. To power this capability, the meta-gene turned Kayla into a solar cell, actively absorbing visible light across the spectrum, and turning that into sonic potential. This effect is constant, and persistent.

An unfortunate side effect is that the absorption ability is so strong that normal light cannot reach her retina, thus she is effectively blind, and has been since age 12. For the last 14 years, her optical nerve has been shriveling, and even without the absorption, she would be legally blind now.

Through the years, she has been able to compensate by learning how to constantly emit a sonic pulse, and by interpreting the feedback has developed a form of sonar, which compensates for her eyesight.

During her childhood, as the absorption field became stronger, more and more light was absorbed, and the world became darker and darker, Kayla developed a fear of being in the darkness. She can still tell by the way her skin feels if she is in the light. When the light goes away, she becomes extremely nervous and agitated, often taking irrational steps to get back into the light. She has also developed a physical need to be in and near light. Due to the way her meta-gene turns the visible light into sonic potential, the longer she is deprived of visible light the weaker her sonic power become, and eventually she’ll take physical damage as her cells begin to cannibalize themselves for energy.

Once back in light, Kayla will actively absorb at full strength until the capacitors are charged. She has discovered that she can temporarily absorb larger amounts of light in order to give her sound powers a boost. Any visible light can be considered a power source, thus she is more resistant to energy blasts, and only takes partial damage from those that actually get through her defenses and absorption. She’s been able to actively project this sonic potential into a coherent beam of sound, causing physical damage. Due to the strength of cohesion, she can actually set up a limited resonance in her targets with her blast thus slightly nullifying all but the most hardened of armor and resistance.

Kayla can also focus her sonic energy into a wall of force, as well as surround herself in a sonic cocoon, in order to provide herself with additional protection. Though effective against most normal attacks, especially concentrated attacks are still able to pass through her force wall.


Kayla Morrell is a beautiful young woman in her mid twenties. Her lustrous, auburn hair is waist-length and usually worn in either a braid or in a ponytail when in casual dress. Her build is athletic and supple, she works hard to maintain a healthy figure

Due to her coloring and the side effects of her abilities she’s constantly dressed in dark clothing, usually sleeveless and scoop back, or bare midriff, short skirts, or dress shorts in light materials. This style is not for "Sex appeal," it is more an accommodation to her physical and psychological need to be in the light. Her "working" costume is constantly changing with the reactions from the press, but is usually of the same style as her casual wear, only a bit more form fitting.

An odd side effect of her absorption ability is the fact that she seems to be constantly standing in shadow. This is an optical illusion, created by the lessening of visible light reflected from her. When she’s is actively absorbing an attack or replenishing her sonic potential no visible light escapes from her skin, thus making it appear as if there were a female shaped void in her place. Often this causes a bit of nausea to anyone that looks directly at her in this form.
