-- August 22, 1993 --

Inside her crystalline egg, the little dragon felt cramped. It was a feeling that had been growing for some time, but now she was well past just wondering about it and adjusting to it. Now the feeling of confinement was really starting to annoy her.

She clawed at the glassy shell, but she was unable to scratch it. She kicked with her little feet and pushed with her tail, but the egg did not crack. She struggled for what seemed like hours to break free until finally she got so mad she reared back and bit the crystal - and it chipped! A small hole opened in the egg and light and air and all sorts of strange scents rushed in. She reared back to bite the egg again, but this time when she opened her mouth, she breathed in, and, well, she had never breathed in before. It felt strange, and cold, and it tickled. She stopped to consider all of these new sensations for just a moment, but then she felt something else, something spasmed deep within her and forced the cold air right back out again. But when it came out, it came out in colors, and when the colors struck the crystal, it shattered.

She blinked.

She was sitting upright in the broken shell - a shell that now amounted to little more than a bowl. She looked around and saw that some of the colors that had rushed out when she sneezed were still there. They were bobbing about like pretty soap bubbles. As she watched the colored lights she became aware of another sensation - she felt empty.

She felt like she needed something to fill the space where the lights had emerged from. She felt something pounding inside of her and she thought that maybe there was something in her trying to get out, just as she had pounded on her egg. She opened her mouth to let whatever was in her leave without all of the struggle, but that just let air rush in again. She sneezed again, and then there were more lights dancing about, but it did seem to calm down whatever was beating inside her. So, when it started to beat more stridently again, she just breathed again. This went on for some time and soon the air was filled with little colored lights.

After awhile the lights started to form strange combinations of shapes and colors. She didn't know what they were, but they looked like something she wanted - something to fill in a new type of hollowness that the air didn't seem to satisfy. She snapped at the closest one, but when she touched it, it just disappeared. It didn't satisfy her at all. She snapped at another and another, but whenever she touched the lights they just went out.

She saw a really big one floating towards her. It was white and gray and blue down the middle and it had legs and eyes just like she did. When it was close enough, she snapped at it just like she had at the others, but instead of disappearing into her mouth, it seemed solid, and salty, and it made a sound.

"Ouch!" The shape said.

This was new. She bit it again and it made another sound and another. She kept biting it and it kept talking.

"There, there wee one. I see ye've got yer teeth already. Let's see if we can find some o' those tasty little bugs and flowers ye been picturing."

The strange white, gray, and blue shape picked her up and cupped her in a bowl shape it made from its fingers. Long after she stopped biting it, it was still talking to her.

"Ye've got a lot to learn wee dragon and precious little time to learn it in. We best be getting started. While we're about finding a meal for ye, we might as well be about finding ye a name as well."

The shape looked her up and down and all around with its sparkling blue eyes.

"I see yer a pretty purple lass. So that'd make ye an Amethyst Dragon most likely. Well, til we can find ye a proper dragon to name ye, I'll just be calling ye Amy."

-- April 25, 2004 --

"He's got your scent now Amy and he's avowed to rid the isles o your kin. Ye must flee while ye can. Even old Diamond Head were no match for him and his accursed mace. What chance have ye?"

"But Pritani, I cannae just leave, where will I go? And what about ye, if he finds ye ..."

"He cares not for me, I am not of yer blood ..."

Before Pritani could finish speaking, the door to the warehouse near the dock shuddered and then splintered from the outside. The moonlight glinted off metal plating in the form of a man, but the black mace he carried reflected not at all. Amy dared a look into the eyes of her pursuer, and that was almost her undoing.

They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul, but the ghost knight that hunted her had none - neither eyes nor soul. All she could see when she looked into his empty faceplate were the souls of those he had taken - the souls of her kin. He would have taken her too had her friend not acted in just that moment.

Pritani drew a small, iron knife from his sleeve and slashed Amy's tail. Amy howled in pain as the iron cut her near to the bone, but the knight's spell was broken. Pritani wiped her blood from his knife on his own clothing and then he ran directly at the knight. Amy screamed as the knight raised his mace and swung it at her friend. She reared back and blew her faerie breath at her friend and suddenly there were four more Pritani. But it was for naught - the ghost knight was immune to her fey illusions. She saw the mace falling unerringly towards the real Pritani. It smashed right through him all the way to the floor, but when the knight lifted the mace again all that was there was the little iron knife. Pritani stood just beyond the ghost knight. He winked at Amy.

"Run wee one! I'll keep him a'dancing til yer blood drys on me breeches. As long as yer blood is fresh and close by he'll not sense ye. But ye must cross the ocean; it is the only place he cannae follow."

The ghost knight turned his sightless eyes from Amy and started after Pritani. Her friend danced just out of his range as the mace fell again and again. With each blow it shook the ground, but with each swing Pritani drew him further away from Amy.

Pritani was right and Amy knew it, and the longer she stayed, the longer he would have to keep the knight occupied. She cried as she ran down the dock to find a ship to take her away. One that would take her far from the only home she had ever known - a home to which she would likely never return.

Amy is very young, especially for a dragon, but luckily dragons mature somewhat more quickly than humans. While Amy is only thirteen in calendar years, she has had, by necessity, more life experiences packed into her 13 years than some dragons have in their first century.

Amy is, in temperament, much more like a sprite than a dragon. She is overly curious and she loves socializing, dancing and playing games. In fact, about the only facet of her personality she has in common with most dragons is her fondness for all things bright and shiny.

"Heroes are not born, they're hatched."

Amy is an Amethyst Dragon, a faerie dragon. She is reasonably well armored, she has claws, teeth, and a tail (though she would not fare particularly well in hand-to-hand combat), and she has small wings which enable her to fly. Her main powers though are her illusions. She can create all sorts of visual, auditory, and even some physical effects based on her faerie dragon breath.

Amy is a small (about 1.5 meter) iridescent purple dragon. Her purple coloration is darkest along her small, spinal fins and horns and it is lightest on her belly and in her eyes. As a proper European Dragon, she is rather pear shaped and she has four legs, a tail, and two small wings.

Amy can cast illusions to imitate the look, feel, or voice of most any humanoid, but the human form she takes most often is that of a slightly chubby teenager with dark and light streaked purple hair and light purple eyes. She tends to dress in gothic style - black clothes with overly many shiny bangles and necklaces.
